Banner Year For Rabbits
We may have certainly shattered the record for rabbits in a single morning. We started from Bozeman at 8:00 AM and headed to Big Timber for rabbits. The temperature was 3 below zero, but clear.
You can't go to Big Timber without stopping at the Fort and we did that. Then we headed out to the ranch with high hopes of seeing plenty of rabbits. There was plenty of snow, which isn't bad, but drifting can slow you down.
We had to dig our way through one gate and only a 1/4 mile later we had to chain up the front end.
Once we got to the top, where I wanted to get, we split up and I walked the top of the rims and every one else walked below the rims watching for rabbits. It sounded like the Battle of the Little Bighorn. I couldn't see anyone but I knew where they were from constant gunfire.
My son got a call from his wife at about noon and said that the furnace wasn't working at home, so we had to cut the shooting short to head back.
Only a total of around 3 hours, we had the best shoot I can ever remember. We ended up with 50 rabbits that were not blown up beyond salvage, started cleaning them and headed back. I was able to get the 1886 SRC in 45-70 into action and get a few rabbits
What a day...

Haven't seen any rabbits near where I live for a couple of years, some virus from China has wiped them out...

Wow.
I am amazed at your success.
Here in New England some states have stopped rabbit hunting in certain areas.

That's a LOT of Hasenpfeffer ! !
We still have rabbit hunting here in Southern New England- but the only rabbits seen are those usually frequenting suburban yards. (I don't have a rabbit dog, like a Beagle - more's the pity).
I sure do miss the Ruffed Grouse (Partridge) hunting, though - My state hasn't had an open season on them for almost 10 years now, citing numbers too low to allow hunting them.
Urbanization has certainly taken it's toll, hereabouts.

I go with one gun, one load. It is easier that way. This is my buffalo load, 405 grains full power...Nath wrote:Great hunt, can't have to much gun for chargin' rabbit!

Re: Banner Year For Rabbits
Shrapnel, I envy you your bunny hunt. I used to really enjoy Bob Milek's articles about handgunning cottontails in the snows to the south of you.
Re: Banner Year For Rabbits
Did I mention rabbit sign?
Re: Banner Year For Rabbits
Although cold no doubt, that is some beautiful country.
Thanks for sharing your hunt.

Re: Banner Year For Rabbits
Looks like a great day! They say our eastern cottontail is endangered and my sons who are coming up in ten days were telling me they were hoping to get after some rabbits when they arrived in mid January. I told them we may want to give them a pass this year. But last night just after sunset I saw two hopping around the orchard, hope they are fruitful.
Re: Banner Year For Rabbits
I didn't think there'd be anything left of the rabbit after a .45-70.....
Did you shoot the ground in front of them and let the concussion kill them or something?
I've got cottontails and jackrabbits on my land, still checking the legality of hunting them due to property size.
Our resident cat and her kittens/killers in training have whacked at least one bunny, a solid dozen mice and 2 birds I'm aware of, so the pest control efforts are still under way.

Yep, aim between the eyes, they charge when they're wounded.
