A Savage 99 is joining the family

Just won an auction on Auction Arms. It's not very original anymore but I didn't pay collector's price for it either. Actually this carbine is exactly what I was looking for for my wife(she's already said I can shoot it too). I wanted the straight grip(she didn't care), I'd have had to install sling swivels, scope mounts, and a recoil pad for her anyway. This way I'm not the one doing the surgery and still get what we wanted. The only way it could have been better was to have it in 308, I got tons of brass for that. Looks l get to pay the big money for new brass and dies. Boyds down the road a bit has wood for it if I'm so inclined.

One of my partners at this last w'kends G.S. sold 7 boxes of RP 300 S for $60 .. The gypsy dealer that bought it sold it the next day across the hall for $15/Bx ..I made the mistake of holding up because it was all 180 Gr CoreLokt and I rarely shoot that heavy a bullet in my 300's.. Keep your eyes open at shows and garage sales and you may come up lucky.. O'wise make your own... Nate

#1, I've dealt with that seller and they were straight up. No problems.

#2, You can reform some .308 Win brass to start. Easy-peasy.

Congradulations on a great rifle. as Hobie said, the .300 Sav is very close to the .308 Win, so re-using your brass should not be difficult' just tedious for the first trim and re-forming.

My personal belief is that the .250 and .300 Sav. cartridges are the perfect rounds for this rifle. I've never even seen a .303 Sav, so I can't comment on it.

It will be interesting to see how that rifle shoots.

Prices are really up there on these things, some beyond reason. Local has a .30-30 straight grip SN: 18XXXX BUT the gun has been reblued AND restocked. Price $650.

I bought a 300, then later a nice 308 came along. I have shot neither yet, but think I will do that soon since you post here. They are well made rifles, too bad they got so expensive to build.

I have heard that Savage will be re-introducing the 99. It may be one of those things to believe when you see it. However, we can hope!

I may get new one if they reintroduce it. It depends a lot on whether it's done right and not one of those clip fed monstrosities. Anyway, home sick so I ordered Lee dies, brass, bullets( I thought I had lots of bullets on hand, my bad ), and a scope for it from Natchez. Natchez has the best price on bullets by about $5 a hundred on the 150gr interlocks(my favorite for 308), they should work for the Savage as well.

the .300 savage was concieved as a short action 30-06. it came close enough at 1920's ballistics, to be a medium range all around north american game-getter. you can handload it very close to modern .308wfc. ballistics, it that's important to you. great hunting combination. i have the 99a in .308wcf. your .300 will do it all.

Tman, I'm fine with the ballistics of the 300. You are completely correct in your assessment of the cartridge. My only minor whine is that I have to buy brass, dies, & exc. for the round. The irony is: I sold my 300 dies last year. I once had a Remington pump in that caliber and it was a sweet shooter. Unfortunately I wanted a black rifle bad so I traded it long ago, after 15 years, figured I wouldn't need the dies. I also thought I had a couple boxes of Federal 180gr ammo laying around too but it's vanished into the twilight zone along with my old brass. I must have given it to someone but I can't remember who I know that has/had a 300.
