I purchased one of the Chaparral Arms renditions before Uberti came out with their one. I have been pleased with it - but from what I read here, some had a bunch of problems with their's.

I am not sure what to make of the 4 inches at 100 yards claim. It seems to me based upon personal experience that my 121 year old 71/84 Mauser could fairly easily duplicate that with 120 year old hand-craftmanship. The 71/84 Mauser was a military gun built for "minute of chest" not "minute of angle". I would think that a new repro rifle could do much better. But, what do I know?

I think it is very much a matter of loading sophistication. We are relearning these cartridges and guns. I think that most will do much better with proper loads.

My experience agrees with Hobie. My Chaparral 40-60 will do much better than 4" @ 100, though I had smokeless loads during development that were far worse than that. Mine runs closer to the 2" range with a load it likes. The first Pyrodex load hit that mark and I've now got a 3031 load that equals/betters it at the the same velocity. I'd probably improve on either load considerably if the sights were better. With good load development, I'm of the opinion that if you put a scope on one of these rifles the accuracy would astound people. While all guns are individuals, I can't imagine that the Uberti rifles would be worse in the accuracy department than my Chaparral.

Haven't seen my April "American Hunter", but am wondering what's different about this article and the one in the Winter 2008 issue of "Guns of the Old West"?

I have 2 of the Taylor's 45-60 rifles that I bought about 2 years ago and both shoot way better than 4" at 100yds. Hobie is exactly correct that the accuracy would improve with good handloads. About the same time I bought those rifles, I bought 2000 cast bullets off of ebay and resized them to .458 instead of .459 behind some H4198 and I consistently get 2" out to 100 using a 300grn flat nose and cut 45-70 remington brass. I will admit that I had to re-crown one of them because it came through the box during shipment.
