5 1/2" Ruger 22 Mag.

Post by Old Savage »

Just signed up to buy a 5 1/2" Ruger 22/22 mag with fixed sights. I am interested in the mag part $325 excellent condition. What do you do with yours?

That is my favorite woodswalking piece going. Except mine is a convertable in stainless with adjustable sights.

I generally carry it in a strong side pancake holster that was custom made. I found that Winchester Dynapoints shot the most accurate out of my gun.

I really enjoy my single six but find it is much more accurate with the 22lr. Velocitors and mini mags are especially good.
We do use the mag cyl for snake shot in the summer. Accuracy with snake shot isn't much of an issue at 5 feet and more is always better when dealing with rattlesnakes. In fact, my wife really prefers the 45LC for snakes.
You will love the ruger but don't invest in too much 22mag ammo till you've tried it out.

Y Kid - the mag cyl is unused. It is a new model. I look forward to seeing what it will do with the Mag. I have seen before on the site here that there is a difference in accuracy with that ammo.

I'm looking forward to your report. Being the cheap so-and-so that I am, I never really got into firing the magnum cylinder that much, since I could shoot a brick of .22 Long Rifles for what 50 rounds of .22 Magnums cost (or near about).

Y, I had two old friends, long since past, who would as they said "pack the back country" with mules in the high sierras for one month each summer. They carried two guns on their hips. One would carry a 22 mag and the other a 44 mag. Both were 3 screw rugers. One was for bear protection and the other was for small game for the pot. These were professional rodeo guys. No nonsense function was their standard. One said the 22 mag was the best thing they found for small game. "Won't believe what this will do to a jack rabbit if you haven't seen it."

Seems like a very practical combination to tote! :D

They also must have been men of impeccable tastes - opting for the old 3-screw Ruger revolvers. I have four - and ALL are old models! :D

I have an old 3-screw that prefers the magnum. It was worth it at the time to buy the ammo because of how accurate it shoots with it. I just recently sold a newer model in stainless that was the opposite. I couldn't get it to shoot magnums worth a dang. I got tired of it last week and sold it for $150 and thought I was doing good.

old savage,
Back in the old days, I had an old model Ruger with I think a 6.5" barrel.
I put a Bushnell Phantom 1.5 X scope on it.
.22 Magnum was good to go in this rig.
I KNOW I can find at least 2 witnesses still alive that saw me make 130 yard shots on running jack rabbits, with this combo.

I have a 3-screw 5 1/2 in Ruger that I got three or four years ago at a gun show. It was only $175! I didn't realize at the time, becauase the cylinder was not marked, that it was a 22 mag (until I shot 22 lr in it).

I found a 22 lr cylinder for aound $40.

The Boy uses it most of the time in lr, but it is nice to be able to take it up a notch with the mag.

My son has a single six in the Bisley form. I was shocked when we got it home and there was no magnum cylinder for it. I called the gun shop back (since we bought it new) and they said it didn't come with a magnum cylinder because it's considered a target pistol. I said to myself, that will never do. I was cautioned that I shouldn't put a magnum cylinder on it because the barrel is most likely a .223 instead of the .224 that Ruger puts on the convertibles.

Well found a SS cylinder ( all that much better to tell them apart) that I ended up getting for $35 on Ebay. When I got it home I plugged it in and it worked like a charm right off the bat. I'm a little hard headed I guess and figure if there is a difference in barrel sizes the Ruger is pretty overbuilt anyway.

Maybe I should try fire lapping the barrel...

I bought a few thousand .22 WRF for use in the .22 WRFM cylinder. Well, lest you think me a perfect idiot (the wife says I can't do ANYTHING perfectly) I did buy up about 2000 rounds of the various .22 WRFM ammo as well. The cartridge is much underestimated and overly maligned. Ammo is much better than 40 years ago when I first shot Walt L_____'s Anschutz rifle. That ammo at that time killed fox DRT. Dittos for crow. It is an excellent feral feline control tool.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Hobie these old boys I wrote about also had at least 1000 rds for this pistol and as I said they were pure function oriented. Their battery of rifles had a pre 64 model 70, a 99 in 300 savage and one in 250 and a 336 in 35 Rem, a custom 94 30-30 with a Douglas 26" octagon barrel and a Win model 62. They also had a model 27. So they would say you are right on, or as they would say "all wool and a yard wide" and fit to "ride the river with". Quite a pair.

My Single Six came in LR only. A friend sent me the mag cylinder which mated right up, no problem. It's an old 3 screw model and I've not had much chance to shoot it a lot. Still, the few times I've run mags through it I was satisfied. Impressed a friend all to pieces when I started working on a "long range" rock - about 100/120 yards or so off. He had NO idea a 22 anything could carry that far. :D Anyway, it depends where I am what I carry in it. For squirrels in MO it's the LR cylinder. For possible social use the mag cylinder gets the nod. They're a nifty lil' sixgun, sure wish I could have it down here with me.

I purchased a Lipsey's Special Ruger Single Six SS with 2 cylinders 22 & 22mag with a 4 5/8" barrel with adj sights. At the SHOT show this year I asked Lipseys if they had anymore of the model I bought, the rep said no , none are available.

It seems to be a handy little piece. There may be more accurate ones with longer barrels and adjustable sights but I think this should be fine. I have had pretty good luck with fixed sights. Besides I have a K22 that is very precise.

Federal actually makes a 50gr load in 22 WMR ... if you're into the heavier bullet lower velocity thing. It shoots well out of my Smith 648.

At least they used to make it ... I bought a bunch of it a few years ago and seem to never run out.
