Exciting stuff! The Lightning was quite a capable fighter.
Are there any still flying?

here is a list of some of the known survivors.

I just learned the 38 was designed by Kelly Johnson, that's amazing.

Yep, Kelly had a long career at the Skunkworks. He oversaw the development of the U-2 and most of the SR-71. Read the book "Skunkworks" by Ben Rich, it's a page turner for sure.

Did I hear you on that recording?

Can you imagine if American theaters were showing film shorts like that one? The weenie whiners would swoon. And the 99%ers would go on additional "lives don't really actually matter" killing sprees.

It's on u2oob now I guess . . .

I wish....that was the golden age of film, and they hired the absolute best studio musicians. Once thru and then a take. If you played a clam , you didn't get asked back.

I worked at Lockheed from 1965 to 2,000. I recall seeing Kelley Johnson. Tony Levier was still there too. I recall seeing his personal P-38 racing plane. He had named it "Yippee".

When I was in HS one of the Bonanza copilots bought a P-38 and ferried it to Phx. He was going to make a fortune by converting it to a photo plane. One hot hot day he loaded his mechanic into the back seat and sat on the runway runing the engines. The tower tried to call him, other pilots tried to call him, but his radio was off, or the volume was down. They wanted to tell him that the cowl flaps were closed.

The bold pilot ran up the engines, released the brakes, got it off the ground a hundred feet or so when one of the engines seized. the torque of the running engine flipped the plane upside down and smashed it into a cattle feed lot.

Dad said he didn't mind the pilot killing himself, but hated that the pilot killed his mechanic and widowed the mechanic's wife and orphaned the mechanic's kid.

Here's a link to the pilot's name and date of crash:
