NOT OT: Sights Question: Win 94 AE

Post by oldmax »

Need some expertise on a Win 94AE 45 Colt 'Trapper'

I fired some Colt SAA Loads, Shooting high and to the left..

1. Will Hotter loads make it shoot Higher or lower ?
* Rear sight is adjusted down to last notch,
If it shoots Higher, i got a problem.

2. Will different loads effect Windage, or will it still shoot to the Left ?
* No winndage adj., so I have to drift the front or rear sight ?

3. Is there a replacement rear sight that has Elevation and windage
that would resolve the problem?
* I like the full Buckhorn sights of old ...

4. williams has a aperture sight, but it requires the front site to
be replaced. Any problems here ?

And Lastly, What do you guys like for sights ???

AND, I really like this gun, Just handles so nice. Keep getting it
out and wiping it down, I was going to save it as a collector ,
but decided it's a shooter....
I AM going to hunt with it this year,
Only 7 1/2 months to go....

They may shoot higher velocity plays a big part. Also the range you are shooting at it may be high at 25 but dead on at 100. How far have you shot it?
* Rear sight is adjusted down to last notch,
If it shoots Higher, i got a problem.

2. Will different loads effect Windage, or will it still shoot to the Left ?
It is not uncommon for different loads to shift point of aim
* No winndage adj., so I have to drift the front or rear sight ? Yes

3. Is there a replacement rear sight that has Elevation and windage
that would resolve the problem?
* I like the full Buckhorn sights of old ...
The rear sight on it is adjustable drift for wind and raise or lower for elevation

4. williams has a aperture sight, but it requires the front site to
be replaced. Any problems here ?

And Lastly, What do you guys like for sights ??? My Trapper has the factory sights they have been there since I got it in 1994 they work just fine for me

YMMV but in my experience:

Higher velocity loads impact higher.

My 240 XTP Mag @ 1900 fps load hits 6" higher and 2" to the right of my 250 XTP @ 1660 fps load. My 250 LRNFP @ 1000 fps hits 6-8" lower than the 250 XTP but same horiz. location.

I've had to drift the sights a ways to get it sighted in.

Factory sights are fine for me but I'm going to be installing a Williams FP sight soon. (had it since Christmas but haven't installed it yet  )

Can't you hunt coyotes or something with it??

I have a first year production Win 94AE Trapper .45 Colt. It has the skinny barrel. The front sight is welded or soldered on. I'm stuck with it.

With factory standard 250gr - 255gr loads and the original sights I had more than enough elevation adjustment in either direction.

I've since fitted it with a Lyman 66A receiver sight and it still wears it's original front sight. It's fine, I have plenty of adjustment left.

The .45 Colt, even the +P loads to a certain degree, is a slow moving bullet. It has a lot of barrel time. When you shoot one with such a long barrel time you have to hold it down firmly and follow through with your sight picture. If you let it recoil as it wants to the barrel will be coming up before the bullet exits the muzzle. In that case you'll find you don't have enough sights.
