I stopped by one of my favorite gun stores after work. They had several lovely specimens, one of which was an 80's-era Remington 700 chambered in .300 Savage, still unfired and in the original box. I made an off-hand comment about how it's almost sacrilege to own a 300 Savage without it being a Model 99. The guy behind the counter smiled, put the 700 back on the rack and pulled a gorgeous Savage 99EG from a corner.

Whoa.

Almost no handling marks. A couple of very light blemishes around the buttstock. A few light surface rust spots around the rear sight, but no worn bluing on the receiver. Barrel crown is pristine. The action was a bit gummy and needing some TLC. Wonderful trigger. 24" barrel. It still had the original manual and envelope with paperwork. I it looks like it was taken to the range a few times then put away for a few decades. I was told it was brought in by a lady whose father had recently passed away and hardly ever took it out. Ding!!

Couldn't resist. Put down half on the spot. I'll give her a good home.

I've been wanting an original Model 99 in 300 Savage for a long time. And to find one in such wonderful condition was a plus.

She gets picked up on the 1st.

Sometimes you just got to be in the right place at the right time!!! I love it when that happens! I've never owned a 99, but sure wouldn't mind having one.

Great find, Stew! But I'm not sure about the sacrilegious part -- I spotted a 1950's Remington pump last year on our local gun dealer's wall. Sure enough, 'twas a 300 Savage. It came home with me and is a fun shooter.

But it does complicate a feller's reloading to have different guns in the same chambering I will admit. The Remington is an absolutely minimum chamber so everything that might need to fit through it requires a firm bump-to-shellholder F.L. size, which the old 99 never did....

Griff I had the exact same problem so using fortitude and willpower. ....I bought another safe. Ahh problem fixed. And I feel really good about my resolve in fixing the problem like a man!

Same here. My wife got tired of digging her guns out from the back of the safe in the shop so she went and bought a gorgeous Liberty safe for the office. She said it was for "her" guns.

Well now...we can't just let that unused space go to waste now, can we?

Working on it. I have to find another photo hosting site now that I kicked Photobucket to the curb.

Gawd what a waste of bandwidth and time that site has become. Probably use Google Photos for now.

I spent about an hour taking it apart and giving it a good cleaning and oiling. Very little rust. Just dry as a bone. Nothing a good soak in Hopps #9 didn't cure. I rubbed in a good amount of Howards Restor-a-Finish to the furniture to get out the handling marks and minor scratches. The bluing is in excellent condition and the case-hardening is immaculate. The bore just needed a half-dozen swabs with #9 and some gun oil and it was done.

Can't wait to take her to the range tomorrow. With a serial number of 679XXX, I'm guessing she was built in the mid-50's.

That 99 has led a sheltered life a rare find in that condition!!!
you may find that one 99 is not enough, have had that problem for 45 years
