I think I figured out where all the 30/30 can't kill grizzlies came from. Years ago Clint Walker did a movie, B movie at best, called Night of the Grizzly. In it he repeatedly shoots said grizzly with a levergun until the magazine is empty, then in typical Clint Walker fashion goes mano-a-mano with the bear.
The bear eventually dies, but not after tearing up Clint pretty bad. But Clint's son is saved.

Yes, but if you actually paid attention when watching the movie..... He states he will be hunting with a 44-40...... NOT A 30-30. His gun is a Winchester 92 NOT a 94. Frankly, I'd much rather have a 30-30 than a 44-40. But for a 12 foot bear, I think I would break out the 86 Winchester in 50-110.

No, most Bruins can read, it's just the one's on sports scholarships that can't.

When the .30WCF 1st came out, Winchester advertised it as a grizzly cartridge. Years later when the .348WCF arrived, it was touted as an excellent choice for all Alaskan game. Either will do the job if you know how to hunt and shoot. That girl is a true hunter and shooter, bet no "experts" will convince her, that the 30-30 ain't ENOUGH GUN.

Old 44-40 RIFLE loads where actually close to original .30WCF, perhaps a bit better.
My Great Aunt on my mom's side lived in the Yukon as a young bride, her husband was gone much of the time, worked on a
boat several months of the year. She trapped and mined for gold, had nothing but a 30-30 like many of her age group at the
time. She did kill grizzlies with it along with everything else that got in her way or her traps. I used to love to hear her stories
when I was a kid, wished she had written a book, but she did not.
they were hunting black bear, spotted one that came in but was acting really nervous........then this grizzly charged out and off went the black bear......and off went the 30/30 !
black bear had two close calls that day......lucky bear
Daisy, I know I've read of one single mother during the gold rush up there....husband died not too long after getting them settled in. She took his Winchester 94 and two boxes of ammo, and survived for a couple years with it. She'd (if I remember right) ambush moose and caribou I believe coming to drink from the nearby stream.
She was all of 5'1" or so with two little kids, one moose would feed them a LONG time. I bet getting it back (even in pieces) was real interesting.
From what I remember she traded for ammo with people passing through and still never went through more than maybe 80 rounds in a couple years. 2-3 shots per moose probably (finishing rounds, etc).

I'm pretty sure some of the "experts" on some of the forums would've turned the gun on themselves, just to avoid ticking off the bear...
Profanity is a poor substitute for a proper education.
Funny how a little girl can take a grizz with a 30-30, but a real "HE MAN' needs at least a .338 MAG, shooting premium bullets, looking thru a Moon scope. Please don't let the gun rag industry see this post
Do you have any info on the bullet performance, like how deep it went, if it hit any bones, if it maintained weight well etc? Do we know what the bear weighed?
The Remington bullets seem to work OK. I've used the Remington 180 gr '06 bullets on a lengthwise shot on a deer. About 3 feet of penetration and kept most of its weight.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

bullet passed all the way through , passing through the heart. hit ribs, but didnt hit large bones. was remington 150 gr core lock. not sure on the bears estimated weight, but will ask and then post it here.
Thanks! Sounds like excellent bullet performance. Cant argue with success!

Yeah, plenty enough for between the eyes, but what if you don't have that luxury?
In WWII, Audie Murphy went after, and killed, a German sniper with a .30 Carbine. It isn't necessarily the gun. If the person shooting it is accurate, then there is much less need for excessive power. This young girl proved it once again.

Agreed, but there still has to be a minimum power level for a humane kill.

If true, who and what determines humane? Gun rags, for years tout the 30-06 as too light for brown bear, but the 300WM. just fine . I don't see anything hit with either truly knowing the difference. The huntress proved, that, in her hands, the 30-30 is humane.
