"Woods-Walking" back-up...

Post by 1894c »

I recently was looking for a .22cal pistol that I could stuff into my hunting bag as a back-up to the 9mm pistol I usually carry (currently using a M&P Shield)... So I decided to go with a Ruger LCR .22cal. It has a 1 7/8" bbl, weighs 14 ozs., holds 8-shots, and is double action only (which some might consider to be an issue, but not with me, although if Ruger comes out with a model that has an exposed hammer I might be tempted)...

It's a mixture of high-tech polymer, aircraft aluminum, and stainless steel. The trigger is smooth but somewhat stiffer when compared to the .38spl, .357mag, and 9mm LCR's. The reason is that Ruger uses a stronger main-spring for the .22cal LCR's -- making sure every-brand of .22cal will go bang... I haven't had time to shoot this one, but I have had experience in shooting a friend's, I found it accurate and very serviceable... :)

I'd buy one if it was a 4" barrel ... at least 3" .. but nice gun :-)

I use Rugers SR-22 for pretty much the same purpose. But since I also carry a Shield in .40cal for ccl, I would try the new Smith M&P .22 compact if I had it to do over.

.

Last year, Ruger introduced the exposed hammer (with spur) version - the LCR-X.

It's sole chambering, so far, is .38 Special +P.

IIRC, there is a fixed sight LCR-X w/2" bbl, and an adj sight LCR-X w/3" bbl.

What are you backing up? A rifle? I'd holster up your G30......

Went all 9mm 24/7 two years ago..I usually carry a Glock 26 on my hip (but now I'm carrying a M&P Shield). Just always liked your idea of a small light-weight .22cal. revolver...face it BlaineG, even from a distance you have a powerful influence... :)

My first good revolver was a ruger single six about 55 years ago. I shot that more than all my handguns combined since. It got stolen and I replaced it with one like new made around 1957 or 1958. Now I have a old 2" model 34 smith from about 1955? Got a few others too. Hard to beat a good .22 revolver or pistol. I still have some bricks left but if you aren't stocked up, you may as well pack a good .38 or bigger if you reload the way prices are on .22 ammo now. Seems I always am packing a .38 now when I go out and years ago way back, it was always a .22. Got a colt scout, colt trooper in .22lr and a old HDM too.

I think the LCR is a solid choice. Another that I've always liked is the Ruger Bearcat. It's heaver than the LCR, but it's of steel construction with a longer barrel. I've seen guys "pack" them in a back pocket of their jeans. I would prefer a holster. Just a beautiful little revolver.

Owned a Ruger Bearcat...it was a great pistol, unfortunately the one I had kept getting out of time (I thought) and bullets would hit the forcing cone in such a way that it split the bullet, one part going somewhat down the barrel and the other part heading right. I sent the Bearcat back to Ruger and they replaced the barrel, said alignment was out-of-wack and that the barrel had issues. After I got it back I didn't feel comfortable with it and let it go down the road (with repair paper-work attached). I thought about getting another...but I decided to go the "high-tech polymer, aircraft aluminum, and stainless steel" route... :)

Never really considered a backup for whatever handgun I was carrying while out and about. If using a rifle I generally have a backup.

Always fun to carry a 22 while out in the field. My favorite for the past 25 years or so has been my 3" Taurus model 94.

I was looking for a .22cal option, something light, but serviceable that I could carry in my hunting bag... :)

Was looking into the same thing about a year ago, thought I'd go with some kind of small 22, then I remembered my Father had an old S+W post war 32 long small frame revolver. Cute little bugger, small, light, and better then a sharp stick, lol. Plus I can reload them cheap if 22's are hard to find.

I frequently carry my old H&R 999, something like that would work well.
