32-40 Hints?

Post by Bullard4075 »

Friend just bought a Savage 99 in 32-40. I've said I'd load for him. I plan to use 30-30 brass
hoping it will be a one pass form like I just did 30-30 to 25-35 Win for him. 32 (.321) bullets being
hard to find I would like to fire-form (if needed) with cream of wheat (after a pass through a 32-40 FL die)
and a fast powder. Anyone that has been down this road and have (friendly) advice to offer.
I do have 100 Hornady (.321) FN bullets for the final loading and would rather not use them up for
the fireforming. This gentleman collects Savage 99's and will not even be firing these but just to have with the rifle.

Pricey, but having properly headstamped ammo would be a BIG plus in my book: http://www.lohmanarms.com/product_p/winu3240.htm

Bullard, if you do make these 32/40's from 30/30 cases you should have nicely formed brass as it comes from the 32/40 FL die: you won't need any fire-forming. If you have old-style dies with the abrupt neck-expander you could have some adventures getting the neck opened up nicely to 32 cal. But I can tell you that the beautifully tapered expander in my new Lee die does a perfect job of opening the 30/30 neck to 32 cal. and I had 32/40 cases in one pass, albeit slightly shorter than spec.

Try Huntaingtons for .32-40 brass. That is where I found my last batch.

I didn't need to fireform my ammo, but did not go much above starting loads. You'll probably find your cases are a wee bit short. 8)

Thanks gentlemen. I've been hoping for the best (one pass through the FL die) but
planning for the worst. Like I said the 30-30 to 25-35 reform went one pass but
this time I'm necking up. And I think it is Lee dies that he ordered. I will mention to
him the 32-40 brass you found.
He now has a Savage 99 in every calibre now except 38-55 which he still looks for.
