I heard about this while listening to the Michael Savage radio program on 560AM here in the Chicago area. He's working on getting the dog back for the Specialist, and he's got some very high-powered help, I understand. jd45

Savage isn't always the 'most eloquent' guy, and sometimes when I listen to him I think I'm doing a Continuing Medical Education module on manic-depressive disorder, but he doesn't hesitate to speak out, and I wouldn't want to have him after me. He's tough, smart, wealthy, and has a powerful following. Other than his getting psycho on the marijuana issue, I like his politics.jd45 wrote:I heard about this while listening to the Michael Savage radio program on 560AM here in the Chicago area. Anyway, I'm thinking the guy has a great chance of getting reunited with his dog, now that Savage has taken up his cause.

I wonder if there is a "rest of the story".....either that, or the Military has gone rotten.

Just simply based on my experiences, I would bet that Major Vargas is a West Point graduate. That is what I learned to expect from the ring knockers. I hope that the dog is returned and that Major Vargas is required to resign his career.

I have sent an e-mail to my Congressman asking him to look into this situation. My Congressman is Joe Barton, so I expect that he will have someone look into it and report back to him. I do not think that a Congressman has the time to look into everything by himself, but Representative Barton has been noted for listening to his constituents.

I read a book entitled, "Soldier", written by Lt Col Anthony B. Herbert, a highly decorated enlisted combat infantryman during the Korean "police action", who went to college after, then re-entered the Army as a mustang Lt. He instituted Ranger training methods at Benning in the '50s, and when he got a class of West Pointers, he found that they tried every which way to get around the rules. He called them "quibblers", a bunch of elitist pukes who thought they weren't subject to the regs everyone else had to follow, & I'm sure they had a long head start with that attitude before they ever joined the "Long Grey Line". Anyway, for anyone interested, you can get updates on this story at MichaelSavage.com. jd45

I have heard of him. The Infantry training at Ft. Benning owes a lot to him. I was at Benning as an enlisted recruit.jd45 wrote:I read a book entitled, "Soldier", written by Lt Col Anthony B. I'd like to know what happened to Vargas......................
Then-Lt. Col. Richard Vargas was in charge of military dog adoptions. Despite repeated pleas from Grommet and his father, Don, Vargas refused to divulge who had Matty or to help with his return, The Post revealed last Sunday.

It is highly unlikely that Richard Vargas graduated from West Point, I'm afraid Piller would lose that bet.
My guess is that he is just a plain garden variety bonehead officer, I have run into several this last year in my efforts to help out the local American Legion in designing a new building, and finding a place to put it that won't bankrupt their organization.
...After further communications, I now realize that Piller has his own reasons, and justly so, for his opinions on West Pointers. My own experience with these guys, compared to his, are narrow, and mostly familial. Consider me "straightened out" and by the way, thanks so much for the service Piller.
