House Crickets...

Post by Old Ironsights »

Not as bad as Tejas Cucaracha, but more annoying.

Anybody got a good method of extermination?

The crawl-space is thoroughly foamed, but obviously they are still getting in.

Gonna Fog-Bomb them over the weekend while Cat & I are gone, but need some more long-term ideas.

Do you mean the tan ones? They may be coming up your drains. Do you have a septic system? There's some stuff you can buy to kill them in the septic system, don't know if its available locally or have to order it.

No... black field crickets. No septic. Rental is on City Water/sewer. 24" of gravel around foundation.

Lots of crickets.

Moromons had enough to make bread out of the buggers...

Just shoot them. Landlord won't mind. Really.

Or maybe not.

When our house was still under construction, and attic was all bare studs and OSB, I 'hunted' mice upstairs with a 22 revolver and birdshot, though... 8)

I've been using Terro insect bait for a couple years. I throw some around in the crawl space every couple months.

We have those pesty black crickets too. But we also have at least one feline extermination system that loves to play them to death.

Apparently your feline extermination system is malfunctioning.

Look on the bright side in a month or so the snow and cold weather will kill them for free and with no effort on your part :P

He gets all the ones that are in the main floor, but not in the crawl space. He's not allowed down there.

I don't know if there are Osage oranges where you live but they had them where I lived in Indiana and Ohio littering roadsides. They are well known for keeping away a variety of creepy crawlies. If you can get some just cast them about in the crawl space and repeat yearly.

Dr.,,,,, i don't know but I have never had them in my house.. Do have problems at the barns from time to time with carpenter ants and carpenter bees and use I Sevin on them. Sometimes I will use malathion because I don't have Sevin handy. I like liquid Sevin better than Sevin dust for applying around home or barn. Reason: can control where it is put and it stays put. Carpenter ants always have a water source. Put the Sevin there.

I sprayed with Dursban for years, never had any problems with bugs. then it was banned. We been using Ortho home defense max as of late and seems to work o.k. if you use it often enough.
One thing for sure once the crickets come in it won't be long till these big spiders We call them "Wolf Spiders" come in hunting the crickets. I sure don't like them but the Women go totally bonkers.

A phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range...

We get crickets this time of year too. Mostly in the garage, but every now and again in the basement. Can drive one to drink!

Sounds like it.

Just got back to the rental with a truckload of books (literally. my Ranger's bed was full to the top of the topper with nothing but book-boxes... and she was riding low on the springs...) and have not heard cricket one in the house. Still hear them outside, so I should get some perimeter bait, but it looks like the bomb worked.

I good bait for perimeter and such is boric acid. I use twenty mule team brand. Borax and water = boric acid. But being lazy I just sprinkle TMT borax dry around the foundation and let mother nature do the mixing. Works for termites too. Being a label reader I find boric acid an active ingredient in many insecticides. Ever notice that you don't find bugs/termites in cellulose insulation? Boric acid is used to treat cellulose to be flame retardant. I don't know why.....Just observing... Hope this helps. If the crickets ZZZZZZ then you can ZZZZZZ.

Have a gas generator? Run the exhaust into the basement while you're gone and see if that does the trick. Works for rats and moles and gophers, don't know if insects care, or if they will be seven feet long when you get back.

Actually, it's not the chirping that bothers me at all. It's the idea of them munching on & pooping on everything. That and I have to store stuff in the crawl space (where the buggers live) and don't relish the damage.

Cricket Chirping is actually fairly soothing/outdoorsy to me in its regularity...
