I'm especially glad that the cartridge belt is rigged with a set of suspenders. It proves (to me anyway) that people of that area used outfits just like that to help carry the heavy weight of a cartridge belt loaded with say .45-70 bullets, a knife or knives, and perhaps a small or medium pouch filled with necessities.

Modoc Ed - I agree. this gives me an idea to have one of our leather workers on this forum to do this for me. this also fits into our discussion on the bowies and knives, here showing the green river knives. I liked the casting equipment and the gun box too. Just a wonderful setup. Some of us are trying to get Kurt on the Shiloh Rifle forum to start making reloading kits of old. Also interesting is the vinegar flask for sharpening knives. Not only do we wish that we could hear the stories this set up has to offer, but it is speaking to me now. I wonder if I can get this together before my buffalo hunt this summer.

Not only the vinegar flask for sharpening knives but notice the "steel" for sharpening/touching up knives too. Hadn't thought about it before but based on that picture I think I'll take a "steel" along with me on my next hunt. Much faster to touch up an edge than break out a sharpener and go through all the steps necessary to sharpen a blade. Heck, you could even carry a short "steel" on your belt, etc..rjohns94 wrote:Modoc Ed - I agree. this gives me an idea to have one of our leather workers on this forum to do this for me. this also fits into our discussion on the bowies and knives, here showing the green river knives. Modoc, yep, i was thinking the same thing. Been looking for a short steel today and the green river knives so that when I go to the leather maker, I will be able to show him. On top of that, was looking for bullet molds, and such. Planning on making a cartridge box too. Was looking for wood for the gun box. This one picture has given me hours of fun already.

I am really happy that a lot of You appreciate this post. I can't remember many (posts with pic's) that stir Me as much as this whole setup. I have prolly gone back and looked it over 25 times and am like a kid at Christmas. Wouldn't it be something to win the lottery and take that outfit on a Buffalo Hunt again.
.
it sure would. I will just have to do a rig like this with my sharps hartford in 45-70. here was another old pic I saw that I am working on duplicating too:
