Range report - one of those days...

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Well, I had hoped to skip out at lunch one of the days this week to go shoot the Winchester 1892 in .25-20 WCF I purchased from hfcable here on the forum last month. Just a zoo of a week. I did manage to get out today though... almost wish I had not. :(

Ever have "one of those days"?

I started with shooting a Taurus Model 94 double-action .22 I have. I brought it just in case the range gave me an argument about shooting the .25-20. It is an indoor range, and they won't allow "rifle calibers" - though I was ready to make the argument that revolvers have been made in .25-20 WCF.

Well, here is a picture of the revolver:

I got it sighted in and thought the the session was looking up.

The 1892 worked fine - and was a joy to shoot. However, it comfirmed a realty that I have been denying now for some time - my eyes simply are not what they used to be. I could barely pick up the sights - either the front or the rear. It was very frustrating.

Here's a picture of it:

And the ammo I was using - got it for a steal at a gun show last week:

One more of the gun:

After 25 rounds I just gave up. I need to replace the sights - just need to figure out what to use. :(

It got worse when I got home. I was trying to do too many things at a time when I went to clean the rifle. Started a .30-caliber rod down the .25-caliber bore, and jamed it up something fierce. Ended up ruining a Dewey cleaning rod getting it back out. :( :(

I finished cleaning the rifle and then the action wouldn't close! I finally figured it out - the cross pin linking the locking blocks had fallen out. I found it and put it back in, but the screw holding it in place is chipped and needs to be replaced. :( :( :(

Strike three - I'm done!!! :oops:

Wow that is ruff.

Are you sure its you eyes and not the indoor lights? Florecents play hell with my eyes at our indoor range.

YK,

Before you go changing sights on your guns go shoot outside. I have a GREAT problem shooting at the indoor ranges. There just isn't enough light to see anything.

BUT -----

When I go outside, it's whole nuther world. I CAN SEE my sights.

I hate indoor ranges.

Clean less often. That's what I do.

Once a year after hunting season unless I'm shooting black powder.

The indoor ranges around here are pretty dark too...why do they do that? I would definitely shoot it outdoors to make sure.

Looks like you need perscription shooting glasses....
I cant shoot with my regular glasses...they have bifocals..
So I had a set made without the bifocals and it works great...
they have yellow lenses and i use them for skeet shooting too.

I have been looking for a 25-20 for years....
and everytime I found one......my pockets were empty...
Now the prices I have seen are almost 2 to 3 times higher...

Nice shooters!

I joined this range because:

(1) It was "close" to my house (the closest, anyway);
(2) A very reasonable annual fee;
(3) The shop actively supports the Boy Scouts.

That being said, I think you all are correct. I need to give this a whirl outside. When driving today I realized that my sight is still very good, but I think I am having a harder time seeing in dim lighting. Still, those sights are darn tiny, so I may have to work on them a bit!

I really need to find an outdoor range relatively close by. One of the many things on my "to-do" list (which always seems to grow; never shrinks... :( )

We all have those days. I only have one peeper and I get eye strain alot. A peep helps.....and good light. I do well group wise when the bright sun is not flashing off my gun/sights. A covered firing line with a bright but clear day helps my groups considerably. But I shoot anytime I have an open time slot, no matter the conditions or set up.
