James garner RIP
As per Reuters new service;
"Television favorite James Garner was found dead Saturday night at the age of 86 in his Los Angeles home. Born James Bumgarner in Norman, Oklahoma, he first rose to fame in the 1950's with his early television classic, Maverick. He managed to score another seminal television hit decades later with The Rockford Files, which ran from 1974 to 1980. He appeared in a number movies, as well, though Millennials may know him best for his tearjerking performance in The Notebook. Overall, Garner's career spanned over five decades and earned him two Emmys and 15 nominations, as well as an Academy award nomination."

I'm a Rockford fan, a BIG FAN.
Rest in peace Jimmy. You made me laugh, and I'll always love you for it.

He was a great actor. I saw him in The Rockford Files, several movies, and I enjoyed watching him. Thanks for the entertainment you gave to us, Jim. Rest In Peace!

Re: James garner RIP
He was one of my all-time favorite actors.
"The Rockford Files" was a terrific series. A couple
of decades after it appeared, I was home for
an extended period recovering from injury, and got
to watch it again as reruns. It was still good.
Even though he was a leading Hollywood man and
international sex symbol, he remained married to the
same woman. He married her only knowing her for
14 days!!
A remarkable man - may he rest in peace.

"I was a terrible student and I never actually graduated from high school, but I got my diploma in the Army. "Later, he joined the National Guard serving seven months in the United States. He then went to Korea for 14 months in the Regular Army, serving in the 5th Regimental Combat Team in the Korean War. He was wounded twice, first in the face and hand from shrapnel fire from a mortar round, and second on April 23, 1951 in the buttocks from friendly fire from U.S. fighter jets as he dove headfirst into a foxhole. Garner was awarded the Purple Heart in Korea for the first injury. For the second wound, he received a second Purple Heart (eligibility requirement: "As the result of friendly fire while actively engaging the enemy"), although Garner received the medal in 1983, 32 years after his injury
His Support Your Local Gunfighter/Sheriff movies with Jack Elam were a scream. Of course, he played a great old guy in Space Cowboys:
Frank Corvin: Well, what do you say, Reverend? You think a prayer's in order?
Tank Sullivan: I was just reciting the Shepard's Prayer. Alan Shepard's prayer. Oh Lord, please don't let us screw up. Amen.
Amen, indeed. Journey well, Jim, you will be missed...

Re: James garner RIP
Ladies & gents,
I liked the man. I found out, about 15 years ago, that he actually bought & modified some Hurst S/C Ramblers, for Baja Racing. One of the modifications was to convert the cars to 4-wheel drive:

Frequent appearances by Gretchen Corbett didn't hurt ratings, either

Re: James garner RIP
I grew up in L.A. near the major studios, and many of my friends and/or their parents ended up in the movie industry..45colt wrote:He Always Had Class....something missing from most of Hollywood today. One of My Favorites too.
A good majority of "the stars" were and are full of themselves and not really the nice folks that they appear to be on the screen. I would surmise that this is frequently due in part to the extreme narcissm or insecurities that drives many of them through any adversity to get to the top so that they can be loved and admired by their adoring million fans, and fueled by their sycophants and fans who further this false image.
Not James Garner; he was a real man and gentleman. My best childhood buddy got to meet him, briefly. Instead of just brushing him aside with an autograph, Mr. Garner (of "Maverick" fame at that time) took the time to show my young buddy some card tricks while cracking some jokes, analogous to the cowboy gambler image that he projected on the screen. And he treated him like a young best friend.
Always one of my favorites in any role he portrayed, I tip my hat to the memory of this considerate and talented gentleman. Although I never met him, I am saddened at his passing - a friend who kept me entertained while always taking the high road in his career and roles.
