Chester Nez, the last of the Navajo code talkers died today. He was 93.
RIP Chester.
Bet he would have liked a Haka.

Prayers up for a good afterlife, and to help the ones he left behind to deal with the loss.

I think I'll make "The Last of the Breed" (Louis L'Amour) next on my reading list.

I heard this on the evening news. They said he lied about his age and enlisted when he was in the 10th grade.

I spoke to some Navajo when I visited Monument Valley and they were very proud of their Wind Talkers.
Rest in Peace Chester Nez.

not sure this is necessarily true. There were no wars against the Navajo. Most Navajo are living the American Dream while keeping all their tribal rights as a Nation within a Nation.

There was a war against the Navajo led by Kit Carson in 1863 which led to the Long Walk when the Navajo were force marched 300 miles to New Mexico, thousands died.

A lot of Navajo seem to have done very well since those dark days, as you say, living the American dream.. :D

I have a friend/associate who is a Navajo and is director of a power plant.
The Pueblo owners of course don't live there, rather they run family businesses there.

I met several Navajo whilst in Arizona and Utah, they all seemed prosperous and happy with a good sense of humor.
Their dogs on the other hand looked mean and hungry..... :o

Better known on this side of the pond as the TRAIL OF TEARS.

Also the Navajo Res. in AZ is the only place I have seen Red fox in the state.

Met a man and wife team that trapped the Navajo RES. and they said the dogs were a real pain,

always thought it was a bit odd the Navajo won't kill coyotes, but they will let you do it for a price.

Spirit dogs.
Hard to explain to white people.
You kind of have to have been there.
The older guys on here have heard me talk of it before,
I won't take anybody to task for doing it, I just won't do it myself.
