OT - McHales Navy- lots of 50 cal stuff

McHales Navy was my first choice and they were cleaning
the 50 cal on their PT boat.

Thanks for the tip, that was my Dad's favorite show (along with Get Smart, Combat, and 12 0'clock high) during the 60 and I have many pleasant memories watching the show with him as a kid. He hated Hogan's Heroes, said it made the Germans look stupid.

The Jewish actor who had survived a concentration camp and played Colonel Klink had a clause in his contract that the Germans and Klink must not ever win or be shown in a positive light. Knowing this kind of puts Hogan's Heroes in a different light.

Mchale's Navy was a great show.

Dude! I used to love McHale's Navy.

I believe that Ernest Borgnine is a former U.S. Marine. I wonder how many of his costars were ex-military.

Hogan's Heroes is another favorite. I think that John Banner, "Seargent Schultz", was a concentration camp survivor, as is Robert Clary- "Lebeau".

Well, I got curious so I did some research.

John Banner (Sgt. Schultz) was not a concentration camp survivor, he was an Austrian Jew actor that luckily was in Switzerland on tour with a show when Hitler joined Austria and Germany in 1938; and refused to let Austrian Jews come home. Unfortunately John Banners family were at home in Austria and did all die in the concentration camps. Banner was allowed into the U.S. as a refugee before WWII.

Werner Klemperer is half-jewish and his family all left Germany in 1933 when Hitler came to power, and did indeed have the clause in his contract about no wins for the Nazi's etc.

Robert Clary is a survivor of Buchenwald concentration camp; and is still alive.

I watched a few of the McHales episodes today and was initially
surprised when they refered to the Japs as Nips. That wouldnt
ever happen
today I dont think with all the politically correct stuff going on.
I thusly dont hold much hope of COMBAT with Vic Morrow being
included because they referred to the Germans as dirty Krauts
all the time and worse. I'd pay good money to see the COMBAT
and 12-O'clock high series again.
With the recent writers strike, I dont know why they just didnt
rerun a lot of these old but goodie shows.

I was a little disappointed that more old western series
TV shows werent included but there are two you shouldnt miss.
"PeaceMakers" and "Alias Smith and Jones".
