The Old Forum - apology and correction and appeal for help

Post by AmBraCol »

OK. We drove a stake in the heart of the old forum and it resurrected. Pieces are starting to come together and it turns out that folks are trespassing there unaware of that fact.

Back at the beginning of the year (or was it the end of last year?) Paco moved his leverguns.com website and forum to a new server. We gave folks warning of the impending move and then shut down the old forum. I'm not sure why, but for some reason the old forum was reactivated a couple of times and we buried it again. Then the moderators profiles were deleted, but not by the former provider of hosting. It is now my belief that when the moderators were deleted, any action they'd taken was also annulled - including the shutting down of the forum. Since folks have developed quite an attachment to the old shnitz type forum, many kept checking back, "just in case" I guess. And when they found the door opened they kept returning. However, we now find that folks are using the old forum for which there is no longer any re-reimbursement for bandwidth or storage being made to the owner of the server. This is NOT good, because in effect folks are trespassing. Yeah, the server owner should permanently lock the gate, but that's not our concern. Our concern is to ask folks to respect the shut down of the old server and not generate any more bandwidth usage over there. The owner of the server apparently doesn't care enough at this point to shut it down himself but it would behoove us to show respect for his property by not using it even though the gate's wide open.

As for the appeal for help, there are no new registrations allowed over there - and our moderation accounts have been closed. Many of you still have active accounts over there. I'd like to ask several of you to go ahead and post a few notices of the situation over there - with bill boards pointing folks this way. Don't just create one thread, if several of you would create individual threads so that the point is driven home. We have no right to continue using that space and bandwidth and what I'm asking is merely that you post simple notices to that effect along with instructions on how to reach the real leverguns.com forum - over here.

Again, I apologize for not fully thinking the situation through and investigating more thoroughly prior to my first post on the subject today. Jumping to conclusions and flying off the handle are NOT good exercises, but I did both. Mea Culpa and all that.

Now, back to our regular programming of leverguns, OT threads and animal rights spats. :D

Paul,

Short of the current owners shutting it down and deleting everything, how can I delete all my threads and posts? Would I have to manually hunt them all down and delete them? I haven't gone over there in a while, but I'd really like to kill that forum and all my old posts too if possible.

If you go to "www.leverguns.com" you get our site.

If you go to "www.levergun.com" you get this and he has a direct link to us:

If you go to "www.leverguns.sixgunner" you get the old site Forums and it still says "Paco Kelley's" levergun forum.

My question is -- Why can't you force the old forum webmaster to drop the name Paco Kelly? It seems Paco could do so. Is he aware that they are still using his name?

As for Scott T that you asked about in the other thread, he was posting over at the old site as late as mid-March.

I intend to stick here and will let evryone I come across who references the old site know that this is the place to go.

You'd have to go and kill them yourself. I BELIEVE you can do a search for your posts and then axe them individually. Some folks would have to spend hours in such an endeavor for thousands of posts. :D Anyway, no telling when they'll get around to putting a permanent stake through its heart.

It does not appear to be an intentional use. To the best of my knowledge they've not responded even to e-mails sent at the end of last year - and obviously haven't killed the forum. So it's a case of neglect on their part - but it would be admirable if we'd merely post a few "follow us to the new campfire" signs explaining WHY (we're not paying for the bandwidth used there) and then we all just ignore its existence. That (to my mind) is making the best of the situation. One reason for changing servers was due to the lack of customer support. And this situation merely emphasizes the importance of that decision.

Something a little odd. If you go to "www.leverguns.sixgunner.com" it opens in the old forums but if you click HOME at the top of the page, it brings you to these forums. So, someone somewhere has the two sites linked. If it is the guy who is still trying to keep the old forums going, then you should be able to block his link to us -- block him.

What does Paco have to say about the guy at the old forum using his (Paco's) name?

OOPS!! I posted this before I read your reply to my other post. Disregard.

Mine went something like:

"Hey Newbies - you're in the wrong place. This site is about to be permanately shut down. We moved many moons ago to a new site:

http://www.sixshootercommunity.com/leverguns/

Join us there!"

Hope this helps!!! :D
