i have the profoundest respect for the BFR. i was able to shoot one the other day in ,45-70. after i shot it the fellow preceded to show me some loads he loaded up for hunting. he had sighted it in for it. he told me he could only manage shooting one cylinder full of it. he was wanting to get a new grips to keep the trigger guard from crushing his fingers.
here is the kicker. his hunting load is 70 grains of imr 4895 under a 500 grain slug.
i am thankful he is still alive. i encouraged him to tone it down some. but the moral of this post is if you are looking at for a great revolver, the BFR is it.
sounds like an OUTRAGEOUS overload to me, and unnecessary to boot. we shoot 525g cast out of a BFR at 1315 fps. That's enough to penetrate and kill anything in the Americas.
your friend's load sounds WAY OVER PRESSURE... I hope he quits that in time...
I'm not going to say how much, but I've used over 40gr of 4895 in the 45-70 under a 405gr bullet. Using that as a rough measurement from memory, I'm pretty sure there isn't room for 70gr of 4895 without a bullet, much less a 500gr on top of it.

that makes sense. I used a 70gr charge in my 338 tho. but the bullet doesn't seat as far in the case as the 500s do. Come to think of it, there's a lot of room in the BFR cylinder to seat the bullet out. way out. probably more than a quarter inch is available in the cylinder...
I sure hope he isn't getting 70g under a 500g bullet however its seated.
I've a 10" BFR in 45-70. I've shot some of Grizz's loads. They are nice, respectable loads that do not kick all that much and will penetrate massive amounts of Doug Fir round......I load a Rem 405 over 40grains of H4198 and it is a round that does almost 1700 in the Cowboy and about 1450 in the BFR.........You're friend's load is unnecessarly stout and prolly dangerous.

you are correct, i dont think their is room for 70 grns of 4895.
