I rejoin the ranks of the employed
I just received and accepted an offer today. I start Monday March 17. Mentally, it's been a very painful 4.5 months, but I considered finding a new career as my full time mission.
Any of you guys that are unemployed, 50 plus like me, and had been making an above average income just hang in there. Talk to everyone for leads, look for positions outside your industry, use a qualified career coach if needed (I did) to help get focused and marketed for today's world, but don't think it's hopeless.

Congratulations.
I'm looking to change careers within a year myself. Been doing this too long.

Do a local internet search, for "career coach". Look over their reviews, talk to the ones you're interested in about their programs and YOUR goals, then make the choice.
Also read the 2014 edition, of "What color is your parachute." I wish I would have read this before my previous employer went under. It will really help, in your search.

Re: I rejoin the ranks of the employed
Congratulations, David! You took on changing your unemployment situation as a "mission" and failure was not an option. In todays economy, and especially being over 50, it's really tough out there. I know some long term unemployed younger people who could learn from you...your attitude, approach and success. Again, congratulations!!!

I've been toting around the 2012 version for a while now...haven't made time to read it. Need to get motivated.jdad wrote: Also read the 2014 edition, of "What color is your parachute." I wish I would have read this before my previous employer went under. It will really help, in your search.
I hope you enjoy your new career immensely and begin to wonder why they pay you to do it

Outstanding.
Re: I rejoin the ranks of the employed
Congrats on the new beginning! What are you going to be doing? Most people don't equate that when out of work and needing a job your job is getting a job. That means putting in 40 hours a week or close to it to get a new job. It is not easy, especially now days.

Good job, jdad! Now I suppose you'll be able to get a better balance of buying along with selling.

Good to hear. My job will be outsourced by the end of the year. So I will be out looking soon. Just not sure what I want to do now that I am all grown up.
Re: I rejoin the ranks of the employed
Buy the book NOW, read it, start planning, and you will be in a much better frame of mind when you leave. I wish I would have done this when I saw the financial problems getting worse, at my old employer.BenT wrote:Good to hear. My job will be outsourced by the end of the year. I have to pay my son's tuition in a few weeks. The "Dog" has my Winchester 65 and a mint grooved receiver 61 that should be listed in a week or two. This should be it...........I hope. My wife looked in the safe and commented that it looked like I had as few rifles as I do hand guns. The only real "bucket list" gun I have yet to own is a Freedom Arms SA. A year from now I hope to have one or another (Shuttleworth) Stevens #49.

This is awesome advice and news. We cut our Engineering numbers in half this week. New masters are moving headquarters and increasing their bottom line. Fortunately my position is considered "critical" for now.
Re: I rejoin the ranks of the employed
I will get the book and give it a read. I have a few ideas ,been doing the same thing for 29 years , I am ready for something different. I have some job offers in the same field , for less money of course. The best of luck with your new job.jdad wrote:Buy the book NOW, read it, start planning, and you will be in a much better frame of mind when you leave. Jdad: I can think of few things more traumatic than UE over age 50 and starting a new path. Guessing maybe you are on the "wet side" here in Oregon? That's where the jobs are.
Hope it all goes as smooth as butter. You've got fortitude!

Could go back to work cause I am pretty young. Do the semi-retire thing?
31 years in one place is enough! Great offer to leave so I said --bye!
But, that is what the wife is for.
Honey, on your way home from work grab me a six pack of PBR will ya cause been hunting all day and I be thirsty.

Congratulations David! Glad you got the job, and hope it works out! I spent most of my adult life worried about whether there would be work next week or next month. Just the nature of construction. The last 3+ years have been pure bliss since retirement!
