Winchester 94AE lower tang conversion
Will the lower tang from a top eject 94 (4.7mil) fit in a 94AE? There are two different styles, one with side lugs, one does not, they both have small hammer holes. Would like to convert a 94AE that has a rebounding hammer to the flat spring half-cock style. I have not been able to locate the early style coil spring strut that can be used in the conversion with the existing tang

Re: Winchester 94AE lower tang conversion
Welcome! There are more than a couple guys here who have worked on that conversion and know more than me about it. They will be along soon I am sure.
Re: Winchester 94AE lower tang conversion
It will work fine. You can just grind off the side lugs and install it.

Here's an early post-64 without the side-lugs:

Re: Winchester 94AE lower tang conversion
Tycer, I believe that the coil spring and strut were introduced in 1977. My 1977 Legendary Lawmen has the strut & coil spring, while my 1976 BiCentennial doesn't (flat spring).
I much prefer the coil spring and strut over the flat spring models...

Re: Winchester 94AE lower tang conversion
Maybe those changes were about ser. no. 5,500,000 and it might include the rebouding feature, which would put it into the production of 1988.Tycer wrote:Just the boat paddle Big Bores right? 356 and 307. If anyone has a mdl 94AE, check to see what year it was made and if it has the rebounding hammer. I believe that's the only way to know.
Check against this Factory list:
The production of AEs didn't start until USRA took over production from Winchester in 1983.

Re: Winchester 94AE lower tang conversion
I could be wrong, but thought the rebounding hammer came in the early 90's, maybe '92? I know my 1994 had it.

Re: Winchester 94AE lower tang conversion
According to Griff's chart, one of my Winchester 94s (serial # 4341XXX) was manufactured in 1976. It has the second version of the flat spring.
I thought all AEs had the rebounding hammer - maybe not the Big Bores. I'll have to drag out my copy of my "Renneberg" to check it out.
Back to say:
A quick once over of Renneberg says the rebound hammer (no half-cock) is used in all models from approximately serial number 5,100,000 to present.
You know, one thing about Renneberg and other authors as well as reported experts is that they almost always say "so and so" occurred at approximately serial number xxxx or around the time of xxxx. That's why it's so dang hard to say exactly when something happened - i.e., when exactly the rebounding hammer was introduced or when the rear sight dovetail was repositioned, etc..

Re: Winchester 94AE lower tang conversion
Mine is 5,384,379. It's got the rebounding hammer. I've always preferred the pre-64 and have several, but this one came along at a good price so I got it. I'm going to shorten it and make it a Trapper.
Thanks to all

Jab away.
The problem with the rebounding hammer in some cases is light primer strikes ,especiall, with tang safety equipped rifles. Even at their worst in the first few years post 1964, I haven't heard of someone missing their deer or whatever game they were hunting because of the poor quality of the rifles.
