Anyone here reload for the 38-40 using Unique? I have a quantity of the powder and lots of 180 grain lead bullets. These will be used in an 1892 Winny. I was thinking of starting with around 6.5 grains and going up to maybe 7.5 grains to see what the rifle likes the best. Let me know what results you have gotten with this or any other load you care to tell us about.
I bet I have burnt 15 pounds of Unique down the barrels of rifles chambered for the 38-40 or 44-40. (or 32-20, 44 mag.) Original Colt Lightnings get 7 grains of Unique with 175 gr. bullets. Winchester 1892's, Marlin 1889's and 1894's get 9 grains.(about 1300) Hunting loads get 10 grains.-------------------Sixgun
Thanks for the input guys. I will load some from 6.5 to 8.5 and see what I can get as far as groups. I will be using Starline virgin brass and regular Federal primers to start out with. The rifle groups very well with the Black Hills cowboy ammo, so I know it is a shooter.
