Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Mo - Which Way Should I Go ?

Post by Pete44ru »

.

I came across a hobby knifemaker, elsewhere (but from Montana) - who's going to custom make a Trout & Bird knife, w/sheath, for me at a really decent price (IMHO - YMMV)

Anyhow, I'm torn on the wood for the scales (I prefer not to have Micarta or lamo-wood).

This is the knife he makes, fitted with Tamarind (wood) scales, from Africa:

His filework on the top of the tang:

His self/hand made sheath:

This is a different pattern he made, with Rosewood scales I also like greatly:

IMO, it's a happy problem to have........... but IDK whether to go with the restrained, but nice-looking, Tamarind; or for the eye-popping Rosewood.

Decisions, decisions, decisions...........

The top knife is really nice looking.

Does this blade smith have a web site? Your post has my mind thinking I need a new blade....

Either one of those two would work for me!!!!!!!!

I've found that collecting knives will break the bank just as fast as buying Winchesters

Blaine, he ain't orderin' for you! :P :P  But that'd only only force me to choose between the snakewood and rosewood. That work on the tang is great!

No website, as he's a self-proclaimed hobbyist  - His name is Rick Cox, and posts as "Montucky", in the knife forum, over on http://www.rimfirecentral.com

I would choose the to one. Love the tang work. Enjoy whatever you choose.

Personally, I like the rosewood. However, with those as your choices, rest assured you can't make a wrong decision!

Rick Cox (the knifemaker) seems like a nice dude - although he has an appreciated (but unusual) business method: He told me he'll send me the completed knife for my approval, B 4 I have to pay for it. .

His exact words to me were:

"I never ask for funds until you have the knife in your hands for inspection...if it doesn't meet expectations just return the knife.
The last thing I want is for someone to 'settle' for a knife they don't like."

Impressive. That fellow is an artist. I would go for the Rosewood. He also sounds like a fellow of high character and standards. I am even more impressed!

I like the first one. It reminds me of the handles I like most that were called stag handles years ago. The fancy Rosewood style woods have more of a presentation piece feel to my eye. The blade design looks like a real good hip knife indeed!! The Trout and Bird knife is a real sensible design and that one has elegant lines.

My hip knife is the Grohman Russell #3 with the Can. Army sheath in Rosewood. It is a beautiful knife and Rosewood is never really a mistake. It is slippery when wet for gutting or filleting if you intend wet work. But almost too beautiful it would suit me better in Staghorn or maybe the Water Buffalo Horn, another slippery option. Someday I'm going to get either the Mini Russell folding version or the Hunter version (closest to a Trout & Bird style) with Staghorn for regular belt sheath carry.

Here are some pictures http://www.grohmannknives.com/pages/handles.html

"Trout and bird" knives are all most of us need, most of the time, and that one is a beaut.

My own favorite wood for such use is African Ebony, preferably with some color contrast (not all black).
