Boys Hurt As Gun Hidden In Oven Fires
March 23, 2008

BY SHAMUS TOOMEY Staff Reporter stoomey@suntimes.com

Two young brothers from the Back of the Yards neighborhood were wounded when a loaded handgun hidden inside an oven discharged as the oven was heated, police said.

The boys' older sister turned on the oven to cook Friday afternoon, apparently unaware a parolee had hidden a gun inside, police said.

The woman suddenly heard loud noises coming from the oven, followed by the screams of her bleeding 4-year-old brother, who was shot in a leg. A 12-year-old boy was struck in the forehead by debris caused by the gunshots, police said.

The boys were taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where the younger boy was listed as stable. His brother was treated and released, police said. The shooting happened in a home in the 4800 block of South Racine.

The man who allegedly hid the gun, Anthony Smith, 24, of Chicago, was charged early Saturday with two counts of endangering the life of a child and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, police said.

Smith was paroled Feb. 22 from the Downstate Vienna prison, where he had been serving a one-year sentence on a drug conviction, records show.

His relationship to the boys was not disclosed.

Would it not be fun to hear "the rest of the story" and see a picture of the gun and the person that put it in the oven?

I wonder how hot the oven needs to get to cook off a round - or rounds?

Well, it was a hot pistol for sure - probably in more ways than one!

...well, someone needs to pass a law that makes it illegal for a felon to posess a gun. That ought to work :!:

I've seen several reports like this over the years; several were police officer's guns. It does make one wonder just how hot the oven has to get to detonate a primer...! I've shot semiauto rifles that got pretty hot, and never had a 'cook off' but I suppose the cartridge isn't hot except after put in the barrel, and even then the bolt is not as hot as the barrel, so perhaps the primer doesn't get as hot as in an oven, where 'everything' in the oven is being heated.

Really DUMB place to put a gun, if you ask me...
