OT--Burn victim update

Post by Thunder50 »

Went down to Oklahoma to the burn center. He wasn't doing real well the day I got there, but was better the next day. They used something called Integra on his legs where the third degree burns were. Probably 18" long on each leg and part behind the knee on one leg and over the knee on the front on the other. He was up walking stiff legged Thursday night(lots of painkillers) and walked about 100ft. He was ready to get out of there and they let him go home yesterday. Cannot bend his legs if he can help it. Goes back Mon. for rewrapping the legs and also Friday. They will do skin grafts in about 3 weeks and keep him in the hospital for about three weeks then. Warned him he better behave, cause he could lose a leg or legs if he gets an infection. No getting on the tractor or out in the dirt.
They found his belt buckle and the steel toe from his boots. All he had on when the ambulance got there was his underwear and a t-shirt. Everything else burnt. He said his coveralls caught fire on the inside of the legs and didn't do any good to "drop and roll". He finally decided he needed to strip everthing off, but it was too late for most of his calves

Thanks for all your prayers

I missed earlier posts, I guess; how did that happen...?

AJMD429---He was using a cutting torch on some fence corner posts at the farm and caught the grass on fire. Tried to stomp it out and I guess that some embers got inside his coveralls, down at the bottom of the legs, and started burning there.

Hope he comes through it ok; lots of time-consuming rehab when there are deep burns, but a good attitude (thankful yet mean when needed) will be needed.

I've had patients burned from welding embers that hit their chest and went down the front of their pants, but thankfully all were mild and the main event was just a spectacularly fast disrobing to save the family jewels.
