A Marine's Gun,
My Son is in the Marines, serving in Bahrain as we speak.
He is a Designated Marksman on a Fast Team.
He ask Dear Old Dad to build him a Rifle.
I ask him what he wanted, but he didn't have anything in perticular on his mind except something that I would build.
I ask him if he wanted a 50 BMG, but he said he would perfer the "7.62 x 51 NATO "
So this is what I'm doing.

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Oh My! That is cool. It would be cool if you could do a short video so we could see exactly how it functions.

Re: A Marine's Gun,
Awesome Charlie! Is the breech offset to the round? The hammer does not appear to me to hit the center of the breech and i couldn't see a firing pin hole in the center of the breech face.

Breech is centered.
Fireing Pin angles up from bottom.
I have already fired it twice.
I love how solid she locks up.
Should be finished in another 2 to 3 weeks.
Will post more pictures and try to get a video for you Guys.
I really enjoy the inthususm, respect, and appreciation you Guys show me.
definently makes it worth the time and effort to post here.

You have an artistic ability coupled with that of a Master Machinist most of us can only dream about!

That breech looks like it would more then handle max pressure of the 308. Wonder what it could stand up too?

That kind of talent is well beyond words. I don't think I could even "dream" about making something that nice.

Re: A Marine's Gun,
Here ye go, " JReed "
About the strength of that Action.
As I said, I have already fired it twice, into a large Oak Log in my garage.
These were "hand loads" that someone else did.
One of them, the Primer was flat as a pancake, the pressure would have had to be in excess of 70,000 PSI to accomplish this.
The good news is, the case extracted with ease.
Here is what that means,
Steel is elastic, so under stress it will stretch, the modulas of elasticity is Approx. 30 million. (this is Stress divided by strain)
When a cartridge is fired, pressure inside the chamber stretches it in every direction, and then it snaps back.
I say it snaps back in case you didn't yield the steel.
What happens here is the Chamber grows in every direction for a few micro seconds, the brass grows also.
Brass being softer than the steel, yields, and wants to remain in this expanded condition, and then the Receiver snaps back capturing the (now larger) brass case, and you have a stuck case.
The modulas of elasticity remains around 30,000,000 whether the Steel is heat treated or not, so hardening the steel will not help with this stretch, it just allows it to stretch farther before it yields.
A stiff action, requires Mass and Precision Fit, there is no other way.
My Action is Massive, and I have a pretty good fit, (already proven by the ease of extraction) so I should have an accurate Rifle.
I will be useing Iron Sights, and my eyes are not as sharp as when I was younger, but there will be a range report when I get her finished.
I am glad you guys enjoy seeing something different.
It makes my day, when you express your appreciation, (all of you)

Re: A Marine's Gun,
Beautiful craftsmanship! From the photo, it looks like the barrel sits on its pivots in those semi-circular grooves. I'm thinking that it would jump out of that when it is fired. How is the barrel attached to the mount?

There will be some Bronze straps over those Trunions when the gun is finished, but that is not the main anchor for the Receiver.

Re: A Marine's Gun,
Now that is just COOL !! So the trunions are just to hold decorative side plates and serve as attaching points only??? The hammer can not touch the firing pin unless the breech is fully locked. GOOD !!!
