It was in an ad, the guy said tangent, I thought tang but figured he probably knew enough to say it was a tang sight. I'll let you know if he sends pics...thought there just might be some weird sight I'd never heard of.

A "tangent" rear gun sight is an adjusable rear sight whose sighting leaf or aperture moves up/down on the tangent of an arc, rather than on the arc itself.

It's exemplified in small firearms by the Browning High Power tangent rear sight and the Mauser battle rifle tangent rear sight - It is identified by a hinge pin at the front end of the sight's long leaf, and usually has a winged sight body that the leaf rises from as elevation is applied.

The sight had it's origins in cannonery, IIRC.

The Springfield Trapdoor 1877 is a tangent sight, as in the top one. The second one down is a linear sight, same as the bottom two, but they are called "Buffington" linear sights w/windage.

Is the ladder sight on my 1886SRC same as tangent sight?
