I got my first SS check last February. I retired in 2010 after serving 32 years with the City of Redding, and because I receive a monthly retirement check from a government agency, SS reduced my benefit by 65%! I get only $270, but hey, it's $270 I didn't have before.

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....
Grand Poo Bah WA F.E.S.
In real life may you be the bad butt that you claim to be on social media.
I signed up last month. Lookin for a rocking chair that squeaks so they know I'm still breathing. Seriously I heard a complaint about the inflated price of burial plots. That's not to bad considering how long you get to use it.
I took early retirement (& SS) nearly 10 years ago (aka: as soon as I could stop working & still get paid ), and have been durn glad I didn't wait around until I was too old to enjoy myself.
I just had to come to terms with my limitations/personal situation, and not live beyond my means - which meant (for me - YMMV) no new vehicles every so often, no Carnival cruises, no 2nd/vacation home, etc, etc, etc.

The financial gurus say to wait, but I agree with Pete.
Just 5 years ago, I would load bags of cement by myself; today I want two people to do it.
Wait too long and you will not be able to do the things you are now telling yourself you want to do.
JMO, but the financial gurus have an agenda in espousing such - that's how they make their living.
FWIW, quite a few years ago, when I became discusted upon reading about the financial weenies that received million-dollar bonus' to go along with the multiple expensive cars, boats & mansions they already owned, I pulled every red cent I could out of my mutual funds, investments, etc, and instead put the cash into IRA-CD's (which at the time were returning about 5% APR on a 60 mos term).
My pals that had bad-mouthed me for doing so, were crying the blues when 60% of their "portfolio" just disappeared with the Wall Street shenanigans a few years later (the same time I was enjoying a "+" year)
I think it's best for someone to do what they think's best for THEM; but if they're not astute, then seek advise from someone who is - not me, for sure !
( I was more lucky than astute ).
I've sort of prepared....everything except a real small payment on the truck is paid off, including the double wide in the Auld Phart Park.....Looking at cheap RV options, including a Mercedes Sprinter Hi-Top that I could throw some stuff in the back and take off for weeks at a time....

I had to take SS disability 13 years ago at age 49. I did not want to, I wanted to work but my body gave out early. My doctor said my body's actual age was 15 years older than it's chronological age. Having worked since I was 8 years old it did not exactly set right with me, but years of hard physical work took it's toll. Started working mowing lawns and delivering newspapers, then as a teenager worked as a dishwasher, busboy and cook. After high school worked as a warehouseman, roofer, recycler and laborer before going on a 14 year stint working in a door factory. They finally closed down and I was forced at age 37 to reinvent myself. I worked in industrial construction as a carpenter and a rod buster(anyone know the way to walk across a rebar mat), in the shipyards as a carpenter, 3 years as an indepenent construction contractor and the rest of the time working for other restoration and remodeling contractors before I was forced to take SS disability. I am proud to have held the jobs I did because a lot of people would not hire me. Why? Because I was born with Cerebral Palsy.

This guy's hobby is his yard...it looks like some botanical garden someplace famous He was always saying "someone" was complaining about my yard, or carport, or something or other...Turns out it's him and his wife....Everyone is sick of him. I read him the riot act, and a bunch of us called the owner....
