OT - Rattlesnake-Infused Vodka Seized in Tx Raid

Post by don Tomás »

Now I will freely admit to eating the worm at the bottom of a bottle of tequila in my younger stupider heathen days, but I don't know about this... :?

Rattlesnake-Infused Vodka Seized in Texas Raid
Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission officials were rattled last Thursday by the discovery of over 400 bottles of illegal booze, each containing a 10-inch rattlesnake in the bottle, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

After receiving a tip several weeks ago, TABC agents raided Bayou Bob’s Brazos River Rattlesnake Ranch in Palo Pinto County after the reptile-infused vodka was sold to undercover agents, the paper reported. 411 bottles of the serpent sauce were seized.

“In my 20 years with the TABC, I’ve never seen anything like it,â€

I could handle cooking the snake and eating it and washing it down with vodka, if I had to. But both together like that just dont seem right.

Kinda like scrapping up fish scales with a knife after cleaning one and eating it.

In Okinawa Japan they have a drink called Habu Sake. The take a Habu snake and drown it in a bottle of sake. The venom adds one heck of a kick but I wasnt in a hurry for seconds.

Hmmm, was the snake dead when imprisoned in the bottle of vodka. If not, was the immersion "cruel and unusual" treatment of a creature? Or possible unlawful imprisonment? If so, is it improper disposal of a body?

Hmmm, in a second instance of partial lucidity, is the sale of the vodka or the snake the primary intent?

I should be a lawyer, for I'd love to argue either side of such a case!

But, here's a better "puke" emoticon: Image

In some parts of this world the poison glands on the cobra are consumed. Yes quite a kick but not my cup of tea. Bottoms up. 1886.

Jeremy, Was just going to point this out. Still have a bottle at the house (small bottle, after aged with the snake, they would transfer from the large bottle to the small bottles).

While in North Korea, one could readily buy liquor with an adder in it. They figured it was good for the health.

drinking

I guess I'm double thankful that I quit drinking. Can't understand stuff like this. Who is getting ahead in life eating or using dead ratlesnakes?

Either I'm confused or they are. The phrase I've always heard involved the hair of the DOG that bit you, not scales of the snake... :?

Things like this make me think that car accident almost 25 years ago that damaged my liver was a good thing (I can't drink alcohol now). If regular booze destroys the liver, what does poisonous reptile-infused with alcohol do to it?!?

I also had some interesting spiritous frementi in a Rastafarian type bar in Japan. The bottle I believe contained a cobra, scorpions, and some other scary looking arachnid. Amazingly the stuff tasted pretty dang good and with no ill-affects noted. After blow fish, cod testicles, raw horse, nothing surprises me about Japanese cusine so I think my host s have given up trying to find my limit. I have always held by if someone else consumes it I'll try it once. The worms out of a bottle of Mascal don't have the purported effects at least not on me.

I hope Charles will add his two cents here.
There are two types of Mescal.
There is the Mescal that is sold to tourists, and you can bring it back across the border; American officials will put a tax stamp on it.
There is Mescal that you can NOT bring back across the border.
I used to bring it back, but you had to choose an inspector that you thought did not have a lot of experience; and would mistakenly pass it through.
This stuff was NOT for the un-initiated!

I remember as a child visiting my grandparents farm out in the country at Ounuki on the south east coast of Tokyo Bay in Chiba Prefecture (later found out it was actually my Dad's farm that he let them his in-laws live, he bought for a song in 1949, my older brother being born in that old farm house). I recall my "Ojiichan" (grandfather) walking the perimeter of this 1 acre farm with a long stick poking around in the tall grass, and ocassionally he'd find what he was after a "Mamushi" or Japanese Viper, and he would kill it then go back to the house and stick it in a bottle then fill the bottle with "Shochu" which is a Japanese distilled liquor similar to vodka. He would let the snake pickle for a while, and as I recall he had a few bottles of this stuff in different stages of aging, but he would on a daily basis take a shot of this snake liquor every morning as a health and longevity tonic. I don't know if it worked but he lived into his late 80s.

As a side note my blond haired, blue eyed Dad was my Ojiichan's favorite son-in-law but my Dad always had a way of making friends with anyone, he was a good man and my Ojiichan saw that in him right away, and told his daughter (my Mom) "he's too good for you so don't let him get away".

PS. As weird as this may sound that picture of the drowned rattler in booze bottle brought back some pleasant childhood memories, no kidding.

I'd try it. I have had tequilla with a scorpion in the bottle and got to eat the scorpion. Bitter and crunchy but still here . 8)

Last time I was in Tokyo my host was running this through us. We went to a place that had 8 or so flavored "Shochu" on the menu, and he ran us through the lot. I loved the Green Apple Shochu, made me think of drinking Jolly Ranchers!

When I was flying out of Okinawa, my (then) wife and I lived off base (Kadina AB). An Okinawan neighbor had put up a new house and invited us to to the 'house warming'. He handed me a drink which turned out to be "shochu" and rootbeer - "I know you Americans love mixed drinks!". It was horrible, but funny, didn't seem to matter after 2 drinks...

I went to those once, noticed they had the mouth of the habu stitched shut. We figured it was cheaper to grow the Habu then import the mongoose.
