Winchester 94AE Rebounding Hammer
In the "One Sticky" there is an article on fixing the light strike primer problem with the Winchester 1886.
The fix the guy that wrote about was to simply cut back the lower leg of the hammer strut thus eliminating the rebounding hammer function.
Would that work for the Winchester 94AE as it too has the hammer strut with the upper and lower legs?
Seems it would be a much simpler fix than replacing the hammer and other parts from earlier Winchester 94s. Besides, I'm having a hell of a time finding all the parts necessary to change the AE to earlier versions.

Ed,
I'm one who converted his rebounder to the old action. As a mater of fact, I might be the first one to do so, or at least the first one to write about it.
At any rate I'd keep looking for the old style parts, they are out there.
While doing that I'd pull the lower tang out of that 94 and polish EVERYTHING smooth. Roughness and friction is one big enemy to this kind of action.
Since there is no half cock notch on the hammer I don't agree with whacking off the bottom leg of the spring strut. That would leave you with only full cock or down on the firing pin.

I have a 94 with similar problems....and purchased a lower tang assembly for it, which returned it to the earlier design with a half-cock. Works great now.
I got the parts from these guys:

Good luck with yours

Thanks. I went to Beartooth and found the article you wrote. I'll keep looking for the parts. Griff (I thinnk) posted the Numrich part numbers necessary for the conversion. Hopefully, he'll see this post and do it again. Thought I'd saved them but guess not.

Can you post the Numrich part number/numbers you ordered for the conversion?

Numrich is out of the needed parts. You can find them on flea-bay, but there is a very narrow range of years that will work w/your lower tang, I'll look 'em up again tonite when I'm not drivin'. Work SO interfers w/important stuff!

Has anybody published a list of the necessary parts to convert the rebounding to regular?
I've also got a rebounding that I'd like to change over. I'm semi familiar with Marlin parts, but not Winnies. I thought I remember a while back that Tycer was switching over a few rifles.

Edit:
Just look at the following links: Rebounding Hammer conversion and Part Deux.
Well, maybe if you're buyin' 'em off flea-bay you need to remember the serial number range that you need the parts from: 4,580,000 to approx 5,500,000.

Thanks for the info Salvo & Griff.
If I can't get the parts now, I could still cut the lower leg of the hammer strut back and get the parts later when available. That would work wouldn't it Joe? I'm not concerned about having only the two positions (hammer down or full cock) for the short term until I can get the parts for the conversion.

Ed,
As much as I dislike that rebounding hammer action, I can't suggest or agree with chopping the strut legs off. They are part of the design and without them you loose the safety factor.
I still recommend polishing everything first.

I might be able to be talked out of a set. You'll cut and use your existing spring. PM me.
Kind regards,
Tycer

PM sent this AM. Sorry it took so long to respond but the wife and I were out of town yesterday. We had a hankering for a Whopper and the nearest Burger King is about 108 miles away in Klamath Falls, OR. I had two whoppers, 16 chicken fingers and a large order of fries. Now I'm good to go for a month or so.Tycer wrote:I might be able to be talked out of a set. You'll cut and use your existing spring. PM me.

I'll take your advice and polish everything. I probably wouldn't cut the hammer strut back anyway because I hate to jury rig/butcher any gun.
