Just a view from my deerstand...

Post by AJMD429 »

...but it's the place I call home, and however dreary the day, or depressing the state of the world, a view like this can bring back a sense of calm, and peace, and pride. Probably the last snowfall of the year, and I just thought I'd share it.

I know what you mean. A quiet place in the woods can be worth a whole lot to a man's peace of mind.

AJMD429,
Thanks for sharing! We actually had an unusually heavy snow just last weekend here in north central Tn., and I couldn't wait to get out in the 10" or so of it and look for deer and sign. About 3 hrs later the verdict was 13 deer seen and TONS of sign in the very fresh powder (plus 1 tired fella here after pushing that much snow for about 2 miles..lol). All in all, a wonderful day. Again, Thanks for sharing that awesome view.

This is a blind I built for my son when he hunts with my grand kids. I hunt on north of there on Bear Creek. There are no bear anymore but some nice deer. As you can see the beavers have diverted part of the creek and it's a great spot for deer to come to and the sound of the running water is nice to listen to. :D

It's funny, but I have always just picked a spot I liked to sit, and hunted deer there (no looking for 'sign' or anything). It worked because there are lots of deer around my area, and because I could spend alot of time in the woods since we lived in the middle of it. I read lots of shooting magazines about guns, reloading, etc., but no hunting magazines.

Now my kids are different; they read Field and Stream, and are learning all about rubs, tracking, and so forth. It's neat to me, because it was the kids who talked me into getting deer stands (rather than just 'sitting' somewhere), and they found the trails and spots to put them a couple years ago. It adds a whole new dimension to the hunt.

Granted, we get deer either way, which is the object, but they are really learning more about the deer than I ever did (I just shot them if they wandered in front of me). We all have to teach our kids, and of course learn from them in the process. It is our poor kids who have to have the skills and courage to deal with the world we leave them (and with the current political environment we're leaving them a collapsing mess!).

You look at pictures like these, and consider the words of the men who live in this type environments like many of are blessed to do, and you can't but help feel sorry for our forum brethren who are deep into Los Angeles or some other large metropolis where it would be a half days drive just to get to a gravel road and a little space. To be able to pee off the front porch, shoot a 44 mag off the front porch, or dispatch any bothersome critter anywhere on your land is sure a blessing that we all need. I'm getting one of those blinds built down in back of my place this summer, need a place to go hang out with some of my firepower with me.

Here's a favorite spot of mine. (taken with camera phone about 20' up in my 'treehouse') This shot shows about 45 degrees of the 180 panorama I am fortunate enough to enjoy. I do some of my best thinking there...

This photo is just east of the blind. These are my daughters boys. They love it on the lease too. I just got a call a few minutes ago from my daughter, she is pregnant again so I guess I will have to build another blind soon. These boys want to be hunters. If they have a sister maybe she will be a hunter. My son's boys and daughter are. This is a great day! :D
