Ringed Bore...?

My .22 Sportco Martini has a very fine, full 360 degree, dark ring about halfway down the barrel. The is no bulge that I can detect and I am wondering if this may be corrosion or a genuine 'ring' caused by an obstruction. Accuracy remains excellent.

I always dry out the bores of my rifles before firing. Any thoughts?

COULD BE EITHER OR BOTH, BUT IF YOU MUST, BET THE RANCH SOME KIND OF AN OBSTRUCTION WAS SHOT OUT OF THE BARREL.
WAS IT IN THERE WHEN YOU BOUGHT THE GUN ??

Here's one way to test: make a REALLY TIGHT wad of paper towel and push it thru the bore from the muzzle. If there is a ring then you should feel the wad loosen up when passing it, then tightening up again when it reconstricts in the bore. If it's a serious ring it will feel like you reached the chamber. That's the way it was in my ringed barrel, but mine also is bulged and you can feel it on the outside.

I ringed the barrel of my dads Springfield 22 back when I was a kid using Federal 22s..They were the cut rate cheap brand back then..It stayed just as accurate as it always was..but I did quit using Federals for a long time..I've seen ringed barrels that one couldn't detect the ring with a tight patch run through the bore..But you could feel the bulge on the outside of the barrel when thumb & forefinger pinched together and the barrel ran through them..

Yep, sounds like a bulge.

My Marlin 1894 44mag also has a bulge about 2" from the chamber, and can be felt on the outside of the barrel.

It's one of my most accurate levers

Ha! you guys are lucky. My son just got his new Rock River AR .223. He spent a pile of money on it and whats he do when he goes shooting? He left the bore sighter in the barrel and ringed it good. Lucky for him, it was only an inch into the barrel and a 'smith is going to recut and crown it. (I hope he reads this as I think he's been lurking here) I'll soon find out if he's a lurker

I have a Winchester 1906 Expert that has a ring and a very slight bulge about 8" from the muzzle. It does affect accuracy one bit. I had a Winchester 74, with the same issue about 3" from the chamber. Again, it didn't affect accuracy.

I have seen old 22 rifles with 2 or 3 rings in them. Often they shot quite well, especially if any ring was not near the muzzle.

For the guys shooting their ringed barrels. Mine shaved lead like crazy. I'm going to section it after I get the @@@@ thing off. I wouldn't shoot it because I want to shoot some uppity loads and I don't want a lot of lead powder in the air I'm breathing.

It might be of some interest to check out how much lead is getting shaved at those ring zones.
