TURKEY IN THE BAG

Post by RIHMFIRE »

THIS WAS OPENING WEEKEND IN FLORIDA. CONDITIONS WERE KIND OF WARM AND ENDED UP VERY WINDY...MORNING HUNT WAS PRETTY ENTERTAINING .. HAD A CONVERSATION WITH A COUPLE OF HENS FOR ABOUT 35 TO 40 MINUTES...REST OF THE MORNING WAS QUIET. THE WIND DURING THE AFTERNOON HUNT WAS....TO SAY THE LEAST...A PAIN...COULD NOT HEAR MUCH OF ANYTHING....BUT KEPT CALLING ANYWAY...A LITTLE MORE THAN AN HOUR BEFORE SUNSET..I ALL BUT GAVE UP AND DECIDED TO TAKE A NAP....CALLED ONE LAST TIME AND GOT COMFORTABLE...ABOUT FIVE MINUTES LATER I HEARD SOMETHING WALKING THROUGH THE PINE NEEDLES AND PEEKED OVER THE BLIND....AND THERE HE WAS...ALONG WITH A HEN, I HID BEHIND THE BLIND...SLOWLY RAISED MY REM 1187 AND SHOT HIM AT 30 YARDS WALKING AWAY....LOADS REMINGTON NITRO TURKEY #4. CALLS WERE PRIMOS BOX CUTTER, SLATE AND DIAPHRAM . THIS TURKEY DID NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT EITHER... CHECK OUT MY LEG....
HE WEIGHED ABOUT 18 POUNDS, 9" BEARD AND 3/4" SPURS....SHARP SPURS
AND THE EXCITEMENT DID NOT END THERE
WHILE CLEANING MY TURKEY I WALKED RIGHT OVER A 14" WATER MOCCASIN...I DID'NT KNOW IT WAS THERE UNTIL MY HUNTING BUDDY POINTED IT OUT....I WAS KNEELY ON THE GROUND CLEANING THE TURKEY AND IT WAS ONLY 4 OR 5 FEET AWAY...TOO CLOSE!

Congrats on both a great turkey and a great story as well! I had a time of it chasing one of last years toms here as well (after his being shot...lol) and it just makes the tale that much better after harvesting him.

Nice bird. Were you out in Volusia somewhere (local) or did you head out farther from home. The wind was up pretty strong yesterday ... I was going to do marshmallows in the fire pit with the kids but the wind was too much.

Congrats on a nice bird!!! Here we can hunt with a rifle during the turkey seasons. I'm thinking of packing the 32-20 this spring. Congrats on the bird again, don't eat to much deep fried turkey or turkey nuggets.

Congrats Rihmfire. :D

I wasn't able to get out all weekend. It's been hectic.

Anyway, I'm going to be heading out to Richloam on Tuesday.
