Picked up that 1911 today :D

Post by Panzercat »

Finally pulled the figurative trigger on a 1911. I wasn't going to see an American Classic in the wild anytime soon and circumstance conspired against the Taurus PT1911, so I went with what was originally plan A-- The Regent R200 by Umarex +Davidson's. The much lower price point and Davidson's thrown in was the tipping point, though I have to admit a preference toward the Regent's smoother lines vs the PT1911 harder angles or the obnoxious American Classic roll marks. The factory magazines are a known issue on this gun, so I'll likely throw them out just as soon as I can get good brands slapped in.

In lieu of range time let alone hunting for ammunition, here's some eye candy.

Image
Pretty much everything that it comes with. Even includes the spent round used to document the factory test fire (the yellow packet).

The test round casing mentioned earlier...

A set of burl ironwood grips I've been holding in reserve. Still undecided vs the all business look of the factory hogue grips.

We didn't just bring sexy back, we brought her friends too.

Overall, I'm liking everything about the gun. In terms of fit and finish, I'd give it a 4/5. BTW; Thanks for the advice in the Taurus 1911 thread. I just couldn't ignore the cost savings, davidson's and the looks, however. I'll eventially hit the range for some practice and let you know how it goes :)

Howdy,
Nice looking rig.... I've been looking around for a pair of those burlwood grips.. Where did you find them?

Thanks,

Friend knew I was looking for a 1911 and threw them my way. Not sure of his source, but I think they're all over ebay honestly.

Oh, just found this guy too. Looks like a startup.

I think it's all the moving parts and mechanisms, but seriously, why do I have this love affair with turn of the century firearms? 1894. 1911. One of these days I might move up into the 20s and 30s or something :P

Surprised how many questions that lever gets. It's a Mossberg 464 30-30 w/marinekote finish; also a Davidson's like the 1911, ironically. I didn't plan it that way but its a happy coincidence. The Allen buttstock shell holder and generic sling shell holder are the only mods thus far.

Huh! From that angle it looks like a Winchester.
Interesting.

Pretty darn similar save the front serrations. I might have an ambidextrous safety you don't, but other than that... Ruger was certainly on the short list if I could have found availibility and a good deal. Kinda the same issue with all my alternates and I even kinda lucked out on this one.

Threw the burl grips back on there and I have to say it's a sexy beast. Seems to fit my hand better too.

The best review on these things indicates a spongy saftey, but I'm thinking that's because of the poor fit between the hogue grips and the safety lever. There's a slot notched out for play, but not nearly enough. The wood grips wouldn't fit flush either so I did some careful work with a dremel to carve a sufficient channel in the wood. It's nice and clicky now :)

Finally found some UMC at Dick's. Last box of .45acp (50 rounds) on the shelf :\
I was only just now able to load the mags, let alone even think about shooting it!
olyinaz wrote:Quanto (if you don't mind the quesiton)?
$580 list, $630 after tax (w/free extra mag for 2 total). I probably could have gotten it a tad cheaper before The Greatest Gun Salesman opened his mouth, but my cost was higher because I bought local and ate the tax.

.

IMO that burlwood gripmaker's a good deal:

The basic/smooth grips are $25, + $5 for bottom bevel & MSH pin cuts, then + $10 for premium burl wood, less ($5 or $7.50) for other wood & lamo grips.

$40 w/o checkering seems right-nice, to me......................
