One Shot
Yesterday evening we had a family gathering at my folks' cabin to bid farewell to my niece and nephew before they go to Japan for four years (Air Force). I went up to the barn to feed when I first got there and while doing that, I heard smebody shooting something big off the bench.
When I was through, I went over to see what they were shooting. It was a scoped Rimmington 710 in 7mm mag. They said they were looking for something to shoot at. I mentioned the steel plate at 200 yards and they said they had done that and it wasn't really much of a challenge with that setup off the bench. I agreed.
I went to my truck and got Puzzle One, my Winchester 94 trapper in .38-55. I handed it to the lad and told him to try it with that. He had never handled a 94 before and I doubt he had ever shot an open sighted centerfire before either. I told him to hold about a foot over and he fired a few rounds, but never connected.
I took the little carbine and sat down, but did not use the bench top. I fired one round and rang the gong. I smiled and said, "I'm through."

Always the trigger nut, never the trigger.
My son (about 8 at the time) didn't want to visit his Grandpa in TN as it would mean he couldn't go shooting with me. Grandpa allowed as he'd take the boy squirrel huntin', "better'n shootin' targets any day." That did the trick, back to TN we shipped him for the summer. Called me a few nights before he was due to come home... paraphrasing the conversation, his side went something like: "Went squirrel huntin' today. Got one, but Grandpa's .22 got a scope... seemed like CHEATIN'!"
I was so proud, I could bust... Dad's still laughing about it!

The lad showed his mettle this morning. We went out to check the new hog trap (something little got the bait w/o getting caught) and took a few other guns.
Yesterday he was shoting my .38-55 with a real rain bow load (275 gr bullet @ ~1375 at a 200 yard gong). I handed him my son's .30-30 trapper loaded w/ 164 gr cast at ~ 1900. Using a Williams FP, he rang the gong in one shot (same range).
He just smiled and handed the gun back.
Later he made the comment that the .30-30 was more gun than he had expected.
