OT--KICK--sore shoulder--BOTH sides!

Call me a wimp but shot my Browning A-Bolt 6 times yesterday and now have a moderately sore shoulder--on BOTH sides. What gives with this both sides business?

At the time recoil didn't seem too bad. One shot with Hornady hot factory load was felt more than the rest. All I had that evening was a few thin blue lines on front of shoulder. Shoulder didn't feel bad at all.

Gun has stock Browning recoil pad. May get a limbsaver and while I'm at it probably have a barrel band/sling swivel installed on barrel. Is there a better recoil pad than the limbsaver?

I really like this gun--and this cartridge. Maybe a tad on the light side but that's o.k.

Maybe my 67 yr old shoulder is trying to tell me it's age.??

It is hard to believe that the back side of my shoulder is about as sore as the front side. Just moderately sore and not that bad. Only 6 rounds and standing position. Hard to believe. Didn't feel too bad at all when I was shooting.

I get this any time I shoot a couple of stout rounds or a box or so of centerfire or shotgun ammo. I had some parts in my shoulder replaced. What hurts a day or two after, and last for up to a week is the inflammation that results from the recoil. Two Saturday's ago I shot about 40 .308's and 20 45-70's in Krodle Kountry. I have taken anti-inflammatory meds since, with the occassional tylenol. I think about two more days will get me back to normal. The pain projects up my neck on one side.

The point is, something could be swelling up in your shoulder and causing the soreness and pain. If some nerves are slightly compressed from the swelling you can feel pain in places other than the shooting shoulder.

Ice, anti-inflammatory and moderation will help. Good luck!

Dang it, you're right. The cartridge I'm shooting is the 375 H&H mag, 270 gr Remington and Hornady. Shot 4 Remington and 2 Hornady.

Shot one holding gun by my side. No problem but you do have to hang on!

Shooting from the hip with a 375, words other than whimp come to mind...

You could have pulled a muscle etc... you can also hurt your neck and get pain under the rear shoulder blade.

Having shot more than my fair share of .458 Win Mag., I may have some insight.
Even though you are letting the gun come to you, your body is trying to adjust to the recoil impulse; during the recoil impulse.
Your off shoulder is pulling back from the recoil to re-align itself, the force is equal to the recoil to come back to nuetral.
The shoulder against the butt is taking the impact, the off side is doing the work of re- aligning.

Ever once in a while, I get my 12ga runnin' a little faster than I can, and pull off a shot before the pad is against my shoulder. I certainly feel it, and have the bruises for several days afterward. And it doesn't take a great deal of distance for that gun to build up speed.

And if you're shootin' a 375H&H, whimp ain't in the vocabulary. I don't even like to do that.

As I've said, I enjoyed shooting those 6 rounds of 375 H&H mag. At the time I would not have minded shooting several more rounds. Not bad at all. That's why I'm surprised about the soreness in my shoulder but especially the soreness on the back side of shoulder.

I'll guarantee you, unless I have some kind of physical problem possibly due to age, I will not be intimidated by this gun and cartridge. Lots of guys shooting guns and cartridges with a lot more recoil energy and thinking nothing about it.

This is a real fun-gun and cartridge and I expect the limbsaver recoil pad will solve my sore shoulder problem. I do believe a steel butt plate on this gun would be bad news.
