New in AZ

Post by SchwartzStock »

Good morning. Just found the sight this morning. Rec'd a rebuilt Marlin 1894 in 44 mag last night that has a slight problem. The rifle has an older (1920's?) barrel on it that looks to be rust blued while the action has been CC'd. Anyway, the slight problem is that the lever does not lock good when a round is chambered or the breech closed on an empty chamber. I'm thinking the spring fo rhte plunger on the lever is weakened. Any other things I need to check?

Sounds interesting. Are you sure it's a .44 Magnum and not a .44-40/ .44WCF?

May need a chamber cast.

My 1894css did that and it turned out to be the extractor was pushing on the outside of the barrel and making the bolt want to push back. I was going to 'fix' it, but once I realized the cause I decided I'd rather have a strong extractor spring and didn't bother. I suppose a bit of reshaping of the nose would have helped but again, I didn't bother.

Image and Welcome to THE Forum. Re-barreled, or re-bored? The .44Mag wasn't produced until the 1950's, and wasn't chambered in the 1894 until well later. But, whether someone re-chambered or put a new barrel on your rifle, that shouldn't have anything to do with your issue. The only 1894 I have is in the process of being rebuilt, but it's lever is tight from the time it starts to enter the receiver on into full lockup.

Have you checked to see if the floorplate screws are tight?
