Can't remove Magazine tube cap!

Post by otteray »

Can't remove the tube magazine cap on my .41 mag 1894S.
Yes, I removed the maazine tube plug screw.
Am I missing a disassembly step? Maybe it's frozen - all the more reason to disassemble the rifle. Can't see any rust anywhere, though...
I just wanted to see if there was a rod in there to restrict it to 10 round capacity.
Why, you ask?
Because I understand it can hold more than 10 rounds.
Do I need more than 10 rounds?
Probably not; but I just like to take things apart and put them together again.
Besides, I live in California and there are no tube fed capacity restrictions here, including for hunting. Only for shotguns.

I had a hard time getting the plug out of the last Win.94 .30-30 I had down. No rust, just dried oil or ?? A little blaster and let it soak for a few minutes and then tap..tap.. very lightly with a plastic hammer straight down on the end. Eventually it started to moove .

If the screw is out there isn't anything holding it in except stubbornness. You might try letting some oil soak in over night and just keep jiggling it. Really though, I would be surprised if is held more than ten unless it has a longer than 20" barrel.

Take the tube rigt off & use a brass rod from inside to drive the cap off.
I dont think you can get 11 but I never tried.

I think you've got the right info, just be patient and go slow. Me? I'm one of the if-it-works-don't-fix-it crowd. IIRC there is no plug.
Sincerely,

Hobie

As far as I know there are no plugs in the carbines. They put them in the rifles with 24" or 26" barrels during the AWB time. I had an early 1894 Cowboy with the 24" barrel and it did have a plug in it. It lasted for about 10 minutes after I got home.

Dang.
I think my late father ( God bless him) felt that by silver soldering the carbine's band to secure it really well, would improve the accuracy of this particular rifle (contrary to what I have read about that...)
It is accurate, as is, though.

That may have made some metal in the Mag cap expand (warp?), if he still had it attached.

Great. Just great. (sigh) Wish you were still here so we could talk about it, Pop.

"If it works, don't fix it" may be the correct answer after all, Hobie.
