Good day at the range

Post by Dave »

Today was a great day weather wise. Sunny and warm in the sun and a little cool in the shade. I loaded up 20 rounds of 30-30 and eased on out to the range. I have decided to shoot less ammo with the costs going up, but to shoot every shot perfectly. I have been doing some dry firing and really concentrating on the fundamentals of marksmanship. I have also been really working on my kneeling position trying to refine it and be able to drop into it quickly. Every shot I visualize a deer or coyote and only give myself about 3 seconds to place the shot. I get a sight picture, take a breath, let half of it out, tighten up and shoot.
I fired my little Marlin Marauder from off hand and kneeling at 50 yards. This is really the first time I have been able to shoot it. The only other time I shot it I had ten rounds and had to zero it so I didn't get much trigger time. I found the sweet spot with it and think it is going to be a great gun. I have a Foolproof I happily found in my stuff I may put on it.
Here is the Marauder target. The two shots at 4 o'clock were the first two rounds. The other two out of the black are still probably deer killers, but the gun looks like it will be a shooter.

The second target is my Marlin 336 with the scout set up all kneeling at 100 yards. The two outside the black are the first and last shots. I don't think a better Marlin has ever been made than that gun although I know some might argue that point :P

I think my shooting will tighten up if I keep shooting 10 rounds a week all summer even though that isn't a lot of shooting. And if the weather, my fine shooting guns, and just being alive weren't enough, I picked up 20 once fired Remington 30-30 cases someone was kind enough to leave behind. I think I'm going to buy my wife a bottle of wine :D

Those are very good targets, I prefer your method as well for hunting guns. In a real hunt You have it covered. Jim.
