OT - Turkey Season - Update w/ Range Report

How many of us are getting ready?

I'm going out to the farm tomorrow morning to pattern my shotgun, adjust the sights and do some scouting.

I'm hunting with a Rem. 1100M Chambered for 3" shells. The bbl was shortened to 20" and machined for Clearview choke tubes by the previous owner. My turkey choke is a Clearview tube with 0.057" nominal constriction for a I.D. of 0.668". The barrel still has a bead but I've mounted tru-glo F & R sights to the vent rib. Love this gun!

I have 5 different loads to test including:
Win. Supreme 3" No. 5
Win. Super X 3" No. 4
Win. Super X 3" No. 5
Hevi Shot Turkey 3" No. 6
Federal Magshok w/Flitecontrol, 3" No. 6

I can hardly wait for the season to start.

Update: I went out to the farm Saturday afternoon to cut some trees that had fallen over the fences and test the loads above. I started out firing at a cardboard target from 20 yds. to get some idea which loads patterned best. Of the loads above, the Hevi Shot and Federal Magshoks patterned best (smallest & most evenly distributed patterns) from my shotgun/choke setup. Shooting at this range also confirmed that my sights were adjusted correctly. This info in hand, I backed up to 40 yards and taped up the targets below.

IMO, Hevi Shot gets the nod so I'm picking up 2 more boxes today at lunch.

I Love turkey hunting! Anything I can call I like to hunt. I have used my 12 gauge, NWTF 25th anniversary Remington Model 870, Turkey Special since 1998. The last two years I have taken my Marlin model 94 or Winchester 1892 25-20 with me. I aim for the red on their neck, I forget the name of that part, and have done very well. I plan on taking my Winchester Model 53 in 32-20 this year and my Colt SAA 32-20 and see how it goes. If I have other truck guns along I will just take them. They are in 357 and 44-40 calibers. I like to cut the breast into medallions, cover them lightly in flour, brown them in a skillet. Take them out and then make some gravy out of the drippings, put the medallions back in the skillet turn the heat down and let them simmer after adding what ever seasoning I feel like. Then pour this over some buttermilk biscuits. MMMMM Gooood! :D

I like those "Federal Magshok w/Flitecontrol, 3" No. 6" that you listed with Remingtons Super Full Turkey Choke. I use a 12ga Remington 870 Express with their 20" Rifle Sighted, smooth bore, REMChoke barrel.

I am anxiuosly awaiting the opening myself! I purchased a new shotgun just for my turkey hunting last year and love it. An H & R Excell Auto 5, 12 ga, 3", full camo. It comes with 4 chokes to include X-tra full and tru-glo sights. A GREAT bargain at about $500. I used loads I already had last season 2 3/4" 1 5/8oz 4s (Federal). I had to use a "fill-in" shotgun in the beginning of the season until my new one arrived, a Valmet 412 O/U and actually got one tom with each by season's end. I'm gonna move up, I think to 3", 1 3/4oz of 4s for this season as the new gun is 3". I did like the O/U because it gave me the option of full choke for long shots, and modified for really close ones. It's a good option and I used both 5s and 4s because of it.

CAMO IS PACKED.....
ALL I HAVE TO DO IS LOAD UP THE CAMPER WITH FOOD AND WATER.
GONNA STAY OUT IN THE WOODS FOR 5 DAYS

WALKING AROUND WITH A DIAPHRAM CALL IN MY MOUTH
DRIVING EVERYBODY CRAZY....

Not only is that a nice turkey gun, but looks like it could double as a house gun real nice. Good luck on the turkeys, they have a way (easy way) of avoiding me.----------Sixgun

BUT I WAS USING 2 3/4" MAGS
THAT AINT GONNA HAPPEN THIS YEAR....
