Old Toy/Trade/New Toy

Post by oldgerboy »

Well, I finally got my "Moron Camera" figured out (or did the Moron figure out the camera?).
Here is a pic of the 336 Marlin I rebarreled to .38-55 with the Shillen barrel.

Due to a good time shooting it and my new toy which picture will be further below, a good friend thought Me having two .38-55's was not fair and he wanted one since he said it was almost too much fun to shoot. I shoot .22's every Thursday night. This fall I gave my daughter the Anschultz I was using and spent the winter borrowing a 22 from everyone at the shoot. My buddy knew I liked his new thumbhole Savage so ... we traded. He has the one above and I have this

But, this is the new toy I found about three weeks ago ... he wanted the nice shinny one I built but this one I wanted to keep

I had not looked too closely at it and was greatly surprised when I got it home ... it doesn't have the open bolt like the one I built on the 336 action.
It's history ... It has an old Douglas XXSupreme barrel and was built by a gunsmith near State College quite a few years ago.
It shoots 250 grain GC bullets with 32 grains RL-7 into less than 1 1/2 inches at 50 yards. I'm happy with it. It is also about a pound lighter than the other one. My buddy never owned a lever gun before. Now he's already talking about getting a .357 like my Rossi ... a new convert!

That Model 36 in the bottom picture should be a fun shooter!

The Marlin 336 at the top would hold about 1 1/2 to 2 inches at 100 yards with handloads ... my buddy is now enjoying it. The .22 Savage will do 1/2 inch with ease at 50 yards but we shoot at 50 feet, off-hand, standing. I can get almost one hole ... others can with it.

The 36 has done 1 1/2 at 50 yards with the only load I've tried. Time will tell how good it is. It is a good feeling rifle with good balance. I need to add a front sight and apperature rear. It has the screws for a tang sight and I have a tang sight already ... so it will go on.

It had a Lyman All-American Perma-Center 4 power scope but I've since put a Redfield 2 to 7 X 32 on it for better optics. It will remain scoped because of my eyesight. But it will also get used with the tang sight.
