OT cuz there's no lever guns. Quick range trip.

Post by J Miller »

Some time back I posted comments about the high prices the local gunsmiths were asking for drilling and tapping holes. The need was I have three lever guns that I want drilled and tapped for side mount receiver sights, and my Marlin MR-7 I wanted d&t'd for barrel sights. Well a couple days ago I found a place to get the holes drilled for a reasonable price right under my nose. The local indoor range / gun shop has a gunsmith they use that does hole drilling for $10.00 per hole. Today I took the MR-7 down and dropped it off, then took my Blackhawk in to the range and got it real dirty.
I finished up several partial boxes of ammo including the Speer bullets JD45 sent me. I can't shoot worth a hoot any more, but at 7 yds both the 200 JHP, and the 250gr GDHP bullets over 9.8grs of Unique pretty much went into one big ragged hole. Shot the red center out of one of those mini sillywets.
Then I tried the Winchester WST powder. I couldn't find any data for it for the .45 Colt, so I decided to use it in .45ACP ammo. I had loaded 6 at the starting load of 4.4 grs, and 6 at the max load of 5.1grs under a 200gr H&G 68 long nose SWC.
I think this might turn out to be a VERY accurate load. Even the max load was very mild in the 7.5" Ruger Blackhawk. I have to load up some more and really give this powder / bullet combo a work out.

I also tried the diopter gizmo and it works great. With my Rx glasses on I can see the target, but the sights are blurry. With my nonRx safety glasses on I can see the sights, but the target is blurry. But with the safety glasses and the diopter on I can see the sights really good and the target decent enough to actually put it in danger. Gonna need a lot of practice and physical conditioning to really make it work. Don't matter how good I can see when I shake like crazy.

I need to go shooting a lot more though. This is the first time I've been to the range since July of last year. I'd almost forgotten how to shoot.

Now I have some empty brass to clean and then figure out what to load in them, if anything.

Next range report will have a lever gun in it ... I promise.

Breakfast at 3:30am ............. that's like 5:50 here and I'm still not willing to get up. TO COLD outside.

The one BIG reason I don't spend more time at the range is cost. The indoor range closest to me charges 9.00 per hour to shoot. The next closest is $8.00 per hour. And the closest outdoor range that doesn't require a membership is 43 miles away and charges $15.00 per day, but are only open 5 hours.
When I left AZ the Black Canyon gun range north of Phoenix charged $4.50 for all day.

For someone on a very limited budget, the cost is a factor.

But I'm working on it.
