.357 vs .38 vs .45 long colt?

Post by kevinjs1@gmail.com »

I live in Arizona and I went to Winter Range today and it was awsome. I am new to cowboy action shooting and was looking for some advice. I want to know what caliber is best for speed? What model guns are best for speed? What type of work would be good to get done to achieve speed? What type of gun rig is best? etc. Please let me know if anyone has any advice. Thanks.

.38 special would be my choice if I wanted to be competitive in CAS.

I could spend hours going over the choices and reasons for each, but... Captain George Baylor (SASS#24287) had laid it all out in his website: Captain Baylors Ranger Camp.

You can get a lot of info on the SASS Wire, but even there, the best advice will be to go to Capt. Baylor's website.

Why do you wanna shoot fast? Taking a few seconds longer than everyone else means your fun lasts LONGER! And, you could always compete with the "ONE TRUE POWDER", which is even better when you use real guns: Colt Pattern of 1851, or '51 Navies! :P  I went real modern and selected an 1973 Winchester replica rifle!

Howdy

Most, but not all, serious competitors today shoot 38 Specials.

Griff is right. Captain Baylor's website is a very good source of information.

For a more indepth discussion on specific equipment, go over to the SASS Wire. We could argue about it for hours here.

I don't know where we're going but there's no sense being late.

If you are going for pure speed the 32 is the way to go. If you want historical accuracy its 32-20, 38-40, 44-40. .45colt is tops IMHO but it wasnt chambered in rifles till the 1980's.

The key to speed in CAS is dont miss.
