Question about Paco.........
I live in western New York State, about as far west as you can be and still be in New York, Chautauqua County actually. I was reading an article by Paco entitled "Survival" wherein he states he lived in upstate New York "on my grandfather’s farm bordering National Forrest land in upstate New York". Later in the article he states that this farm was in the vicinity of Route 17, which is now Interstate 86. So, now I'm curious, does anyone know where Paco lived in upstate NY during his youth?

Re: Question about Paco.........
Hi,
I grew up in Sullivan county by the PA border. I asked Paco years ago where he was talking about, Paco's Grandfather had a farm in Orange county, south of Sullivan county. Rt 17 goes right through both counties and then west toward Binghamton.
There was a sports store that Paco used to go when he was there, Bob Loudsbury Sporting Goods store. I used to go there, but that was a long time ago.
Hope this helps.

Re: Question about Paco.........
SteveR: my parents were the first generation to leave the diary farms in Sullivan Co. Spent a good deal of time there on the farms and I do miss the area – the winters not so much! Every time we went to Callicoon for shopping at the A&P and the Victory markets, I had to go up to the station and see when the next Erie was due. Same in Roscoe and the O&W.
My mother's family (Baker) were some of the original settlers in North Branch and the Newmans were also in North Branch in the 1850’s, later in Fremont Center.
I still get the Sullivan County Democrat and enjoy reading the “Down the Decades” column as I recognize some of the names.

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Ray,
You bring back a lot of memories for me, I know the area well that you talk about. Now the Victory is Peck's Markets and still going.
Do you have relatives in Jeffersonville? I knew some of the Newman's from there, they had a motorcycle shop.
I know there are a lot of families still in the area. I grew up in the Youngsville area, spent a lot of time with friends running all over the area, Callicoon, Hankins, Fremont Center, Jeffersonville, Livingston Manor, Roscoe, and all over.
Great hunting also.
Nice to meet someone form the area!!

Re: Question about Paco.........
Came very close to moving to the Jamestown area in the mid-90s. At the time we were looking at a 1700sqft home on 51 acres (26 wooded/25 tillable) a nice 3 story new england style barn a corrugated metal weilding shop and a natural gas well on the property...all for $92,000. The job didn't pan out...so I stayed out west.

My mother's family is from south/western NY - Wellsville. Beautiful area.

Re: Question about Paco.........
Let's see. I started school at Westfield, south of Brockton, on Lake Erie. Saw lots of Welch's grapevines.
Then we moved to Muitzeskill, south of Castleton, for a few years.
Then Gallupville, near Schoharie, until I was 15. Then Maine until I could afford to move somewhere warm.

Re: Question about Paco.........
Thats a super good price for that, but you made to right decision because NY is really going down hill fast. It seems all the young people decide to go the easy route with life on the Gobberment. So many single mothers its absolutely scary!!MikeNV wrote:Came very close to moving to the Jamestown area in the mid-90s. I might move, but where is there anyplace anymore that is going to be better off. I am thinking southwest, but that will be in the future.

Re: Question about Paco.........
I live near Gallupville now, more towards Albany. Pretty area, with lots of history. I am thinking of heading to warmer climates in the future.williamranks wrote:Let's see. I started school at Westfield, south of Brockton, on Lake Erie. Saw lots of Welch's grapevines.

I would like to spend more time out in the western part of the state. I bet its nice out there, and isn't that where Genny beer is brewed?FLINT wrote:My mother's family is from south/western NY - Wellsville. Beautiful area.

Bob Loundsbury with the amazing Winchester collection on the wall.
They're still open, though I've never been able buy a gun there, they always seemed a little to proud of them price wise.
I asked Paco the same thing years ago and for some reason I seem to recall thinking he was over towards Goshen, but it's too long ago now.

I went through Albany once on my way to Vermont and wasn't impressed.
The western part of the state is nicer. I'm actually from the very very top of the state - St. Lawrence county. I don't know about Genny beer - I've lived in VA most of my life.
Re: Question about Paco.........
I'm a darn yankee myself. My dad was born in Hartwick and the family is from Schoharie county but really we are all over NY.
I would live in NY but for the taxes and the darn anti-liberty (aka gun) laws.

Re: Question about Paco.........
Yeah Albany, doesn't do much for me either. I worked out in the Western part during the 98 icestorm, wow that was bad. I would like to go out there in the summer or early fall though.FLINT wrote:SteveR wrote:I would like to spend more time out in the western part of the state. Re: Question about Paco.........
I like Schoharie area very much, lots of dairy farms and pretty hills. Yeah the gun laws are not very good, its tough keeping up with the Manhattan City-its (you say it like idiots) making new laws for the rest of us.Hobie wrote:I'm a darn yankee myself.
