Anyone use Gun Kote finish?

Post by BenT »

If so , how do you prep the metal? Do you get it real smooth or leave it rough? Does it go straight onto the metal or do you need some type of primer? Is it easy to work with? Thanks.

Ben,years ago A co-worker gave Me an old italian cap and ball revolver that had been put away in the basement after it was shot. :( . I cleaned it up as best I could and degreased it. The gun-cote I got was in a spray can and I followed the directions-heating the parts in the oven,I think I gave them 2 or 3 coats but it came out pretty good.A nice even dark grey color. using it from the spray can I would say it was an easy job.Jim.

Ben,
I used it on a Angentine 1911A1 that I built. It had been recently parkerized and that makes a good base for the Gun-Kote, so I just degreased the parts and sprayed and baked them. Brownels does recommend blasting the parts with aluminum oxide and then degreasing before spraying. Without the parkerized finish, I probably would have gone that route. The finish is extremely tough and holds up very well to lubricants and bore cleaner. So far not a scratch to be found. I used their dark earth brown on the pistol. Here's a photo.

I would only use it on a gun that was already trashed, or that I cared nothing about.

Swampman , I'm looking for a finish on a late 60's Win 94 receiver . The factory paint is flaking off. Gun kote has a Blue color that I've seen that looks better than the factory paint jobs on these 94's. I'm just trying to figure out if I should try applying it or pay the gunsmith. No value will be lost using this product on this old gun.
