Pinkerton's
Anybody else get a kick out of reading about the history of the Pinkerton Detective Agency? Seems that they used to be pretty bad dudes, and were larger in number than the army at one point.

Re: Pinkerton's
There is a fairly good bibliography at Wikipedia's entry. For instance, I checked one of the books, "American Frontier Lawmen 1850-1930," and found that you can download it from various sites (pdf) if you subscribe, or buy it at Amazon as a hard bound novel. Previewing it online, it had a page or two on Pinkerton's and looked generally pretty interesting.

A law unto themselves back when money could buy the justice system. Not unlike most Dot.Gov agencies today.
