Wasted day,.....

Post by Malamute »

Wasn't excited about cleaning the house, so I took a drive Sunday afternoon. I wasted the whole afternoon.

Guess it wasn't a complete waste of time tho. :D

Saw about 300 to 400 deer, and around 300 elks.

Sorry if they are too high density, I don't know how to change that.

I hunt up in that neck of the woods. Good to see a herd of elk without a wolf chasin them! It's also good to see some bare ground. Not much of that around SW Wyoming this winter.

I lived for a couple of months in Afton. Worked for a heliportable seismic outfit. Worked seven days a week so I didn't get a lot of time to play. But I saw some of the most beautiful country in the world.

I could use a wasted day like that!
There is a stretch of Highway 40 goin south out of Hinton Alberta that looks just like the highway/mountain pic. Thought for a moment there that was where ya were. Not many elk there but lots of sheep.

The mountain peaks picture was taken on US Hwy 212 between the junction of Chief Joseph Hwy and Cooke City Mt. The peaks are Pilot and Index Peaks. The road into Cooke is closed for winter about 10 miles east of town. They'll get it plowed open sometime between mid April to mid May depending on the snowpack that particular year.

The other pics were taken along the Chief Joseph Hwy (cant remember the number, 292 or 296?) between Dead Indian Pass and the junction with 212. The Beartooth Pass part of 212 will get plowed open between Chief Joseph Hwy and Red Lodge Mt in mid to late May, and get snowed shut a few times until early to mid June. There's usually 20+ foot drifts they cut thru on the north side of the pass. Patches of snow will be around near Beartooth Pass til late August.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures. We were up there the first part of August and talked about what it would look like in the winter. We spent three days in Cody, great country. Forgot that you were close by.

What, no bighorns?

I've driven by the start of 212 quite a few times in the last couple of years. Maybe I ought to try driving it once. :)

I've seen Bighorns in several places but not up where I was that day. The Northfork Hwy and Southfork Rd both out of Cody usually have Bighorns around in winter.

On productive days, I build stuff like this.

This was the last one I sold. I'm doing another similar one now. Hope to be done in a month or so. Maybe I can take a couple weeks off then!!

By gum, that is productive! I really like your style. For retirement, I'm planning to purchase 100 acres of semi-wilderness. For the house I'd like to have built on that, I may have to bring you up to 'be productive'! :)

I am looking to building a cabin on some land for retirement too. need to downsize from the colonial. maybe in a few years. all this work and no time to play is rediculous. Nice cabin and wonderful pics of your day trip thanks .

Malamute,

Very nice pictures.

I think your cabin is as impressive as the scenery.

One of the best things about that cabin is the surrounding small rock on the ground. No grass mowing !!

Do you enjoy cabin building? I would think so. Mighty nice to enjoy what you do and in country you love to be in.
