We had geese here at our house for a while and I have to tell you that I've never felt as secure as I did with them. I had a small flock of 6 and they never all go to sleep. One or two of them always stays awake to provide security for the flock. When I would leave the house to go to work at 2 or 3 AM I would see this in action. If my brother in law from next door came over they had a certain sound they would make. If it was a total stranger it would be a different sound. Stray dogs sounded different as well. I never had to look to tell what was going on outside.
My wife had problems with them though as she wouldn't stop to discipline them and they would chase her. they can be fierce.

I used to deliver beer for a living. Just outside Hoosick Falls NY was a bar
"Man of Kent" run by a very nice English gent.

He had quite a large fence around his property, only the front of both is bar
and house along with the parking lot weren't fenced in.

To get the kegs in his basement I had to go through the gate and down around
back on a trail. Needless to say from the thread he had a goose and almost
everytime I went into the enclosure I would get "nipped".

Most nips didn't bother ya but every once in a while he would get a good pinch
on ya and it would wake ya up quick.
