1901 Winchester question

Well I am looking at another lever action shotgun. I haven't seen the gun yet. Anyway in asking the dealer questions about the bore he said it looked great other than a ring in the bore about 2 inches from the end of the muzzle. They don't have any idea about why it is there and they say otherwise the bore looks great. My thought was it may be where the transistion from the bore diameter to where the constriction for the full choke begins. They gun shop people I was talking to didn't think that was the case stating that 2 inches from the muzzle is to deep for the constriction. Clearly todays screw in-chokes are 2" into the bore. Any thoughts? Has anybody seen something like that? Should I steer clear even though at most I am out shipping both ways given a three day inspection period

Ask the dealer to run his hand over the barrel where the ring is. If he feels a bulge, well, you have two choices--shoot it or keep it as is or cut some off. If he does not feel a bulge, something caused the ring as its not supposed to be there. In any case, 1901's are not all over the place, so like most things in life, you have a slight gamble. Is it priced according to the ring being there or is he charging you full Blue Book as if the gun was "right"?----------Sixgun

I remember reading that there was a time when they were trying
to figure out what gave the best choke and there were alot of
differing schools of thought. One I think was to undercut unside
like you described and this was to act like a nozzle. Good advise
on checking the outside for a bulge, if not then I wouldn't let it
stop me.

I think the design you're talking about was called a jug choke.
