Missing Screw

Post by vaughn357 »

Hi all. I just received my Rossi 92 today and it seems to be missing a screw. I've looked at all the pictures I can find and can't tell if it is missing or shouldn't have a screw. You can see in the picture there is a hole with nothing in it at the top right of the loading gate..
I appreciate any help that can be offered.

That hole is not a screw hole, if you look on the opposite side of the receiver you will see a slotted screw head. The hole is to push out a retaining pin in the bolt after the slotted screw is removed using a properly sized pin or punch. The pin that is pushed out is held in place by the slotted screw. When you want to remove the action bolt, take out the slotted screw, under it is a pin which has to be removed to allow the lever to be removed. Then push or pull the action bolt out of the receiver. When reassembling the action you can use a pin to hold the bolt in position through that hole, until the bolt pin is pushed back into place. Then replace the slotted headed screw. OR Something like that. Be careful, little parts have a way of going places when you are not looking, I use a magnet to hold them on the work surface. Also Contact Nate"Kiowa"Johns and get his DVD on assembly and disassemble of the rifle. He has his advertisement on the front page of this site. "Steve's Guns". The money for the DVD is well spent, his tips on tune ups are great. Don't use any real force in removing the slotted screw (it is really just cup on the other side) everything should come apart easily and should go back together. One last thing if you are looking to get the DVD, check out a stainless steel magazine follower, which goes on the working end of the magazine tube spring. New rifles have plastic and may not hold up. Enjoy and good luck.

Thanks for the welcome.
Now on to the next question. Seems it is hard to load due to the loading gate not going down far enough or the body of the rifle needs a touch of file work to open this area the least little bit. So far I've broke a finger nail and wore down one thumb nail. If any one has any ideas I would appreciate reading them.

Try inserting each cartridge only 3/4ths of the way into/through the loading gate, then push it all the way in with the next cartridge you're loading, etc, etc, until you have only the last cartridge to seat fully in the magazine throat.

Ta-Da...! Yet another levergun-forum solution. Aren't we cool...? 8)

(That's one even I could have answered, and there aren't too many of those... )

Anyway, I'll add my WELCOME to the others.

Don't feel bad, I had the same question when I got hold of my first Rossi 92. Even worse, after taking it apart, I lost the screw from the opposite side. I tried the "buy another, and then you'll find the one you lost trick" (usually works for tools like ViceGrips, sockets, etc.), to no avail, but at least I got a replacement from Rossi/Taurus.

1st, Image and Welcome to THE Forum!

2nd it's outstanding that you used a picture to illustrate your question. Reading comprehension is not our strong suite, so visual aids cuut down on our questions and narrows the incorrect guesses to a minimum! :P

The trick I use to ease the loading process is to leave at the rim sticking out thru the loading port, then use the nose of the next cartridge to finish loading. After the first few, you'll probably have to hold the partially inserted cartridge in place to overcome the mag spring tension, which WILL try to eject it back out. The "spring cover" (correct nomenclature according to Winchester), is quite stiff, and on some guns a bit of polishing might be in order. I haven't found that to be the case with my 3 Rossis

vaughn357,

Nate's DVD is really the way to go. I will add that all of the Model 92-type rifles are similar, and there is another piece of literature that you shaould have: the Browning B-92 Field Service Manual. You can download a "PDF" copy from here:

http://stevespages.com/page7b.htm

Here is the sort of information that the Field Service Manual contains:

The manual includes very good, written instructions, too.
